Explanation To All These Abbreviations, Maybe?

Recommended Posts

Hi folks

I'd like to start with saying that I am a fresh newbie to this forum, and am really glad I came across you guys. Eventhough I have had an interest for cars before I could walk, I am not really into the mechanical stuff, such as how things work and especially what all of these abbreviations used at this forum actually stand for.

If such a thread doesn't already exist, how about setting up something like a "slang/abbreviations dictionary" letting us mechanic wannabies get a good start taking good care of our rides without forking out the crazy dough to the dealer shops.. If someone knows about an already excisting place with this kind of info don't be shy revealing where to look for it..

So you experienced guys, please share your knowledge..

Thanks..

ones that get used very commonly on Volvospeed in no order

PNP (neutral safety switch on transmission)

BCS (boost control solenoid, routes vaccum to the turbo

MAF(also called AMM or air mass meter/mass air flow sensor, round thing by airbox that processes air and sends info to ECU for ignition and air fuel ratio)

AFR air fuel ratio

MAP (manifold absolute pressure, also called baro sensor in some cars, some cars have both, some have one or the other, they throw the same code on scanner

CEL check engine light

TPS throttle position sensor

CPS crankshaft position sensor

HPT - High Pressure Turbo engine, which came in the "TURBO", T5, and R models

LPT - Low Pressure Turbo engine, found in the S/V70 GLT's, AWD's, and XC70's, and a few others. Not sure which 850s, check the stickies if you wanna know.

NA - Stands for slow. (Naturally Aspirated) no turbo :( Came on the base model S/V/70 and 850's

13G, 15G, 16T, 18T, and 19T stand for some of the OEM turbo sizes (again check the stickies for which one came on what model). Technically its TD04HL-xxx but no need to write that one. People know whatchu talkin 'bout.

whatever either answer the question or politely correct my mistake. don't just be a dick

btw i like your srt

no i wasn't pointing out a mistake. you had it right, most people say CPS is the camshaft... it actually is the crankshaft. I was pointing out i was happy you had it right, i see tons of people saying it is the camshaft position sensor (which is incorrect).

thanks for the compliment on the srt. the one in my sig is the MOPAR sponsored DCR Drag car, it's insane. it's basically a test bed for all their products... insane stuff, you can buy everything on their 7sec car for a street SRT-4, they are the best SRT-4 builders in the world. They built the 10.3 street SRT-4, at the owners request it will never see a dyno, all tuning is done on the track. they also are building a street block/transmission for this car: http://videos.streetfire.net/video/ead1e9e...89e01836569.htm ... :o
