Blown Cat Symptoms?

ok i'll start with i just did the spark ,wire, cap rotor, fuel, oil filter. i also took out the the pipe to the heat shield going to the air box and capped that off. i was getting a metal clinging noise. which i though was the heat shield that the hose connected to . so i took it off also. but the noise is still there. i also have a knock in my engine even after my car heats up. i have done some research . and i'm starting to think that my cat got blown out. and the parts i am hearing clinging around is in my cat. and the knock noise in my enginge is also from my cat being blown out. has anyone had these symptoms with a blown cat before?or am i looking at 2 different problems with 2 different solutions?

i just hit the cat with a hammer and it sounded pretty solid... another thing is that the clinging sound doesnt happen until i drive at low rpm's. it sounds like a heat shield but its coming from the enging compartment.

well, the turbo cars have heatshields over the turbo, and they tend to rattle if they're not loose....don't know if the NA cars have anything similar, but I would check in that area....there should be a shield over the exhaust manifold.

yeah i looked down and smacked the shield with a hammer. the one near the header and it stopped rattling... and one other symptom i'm having is that my engine i think backfires. well after i hit the gas, at the top of the rpm's it gives a little chug chug then it goes back down. i forgot to put that in the initial post... any suggestons?
