Avoiding The Drone

Recommended Posts

I don't think I can live with the drone that my old R had w/ the 3in cat back . Almost all the other Volvo's I've driven or ridden in whether it be iPd or EST exhaust equipped had it too.

What I wanted to know is - has anybody done a 3in DP into a Magnaflow SS cat (hi-flow) going into the stock muffler ?

THat stock muffler is SS and is not at all too shabby. One would think that the boys in the R/D dept at Volvo put more time into it than the guys at Magnaflow...mebbe ?

The only thing that worries me is keeping my turbo cool enough once I get the RICA on there.

Also, I'll be adding a FMIC sometime before summer, but I don't think that really helps keeping the turbo cooler.

All thoughts are appreciated.

Yeah...I hear at least one resonator is the deal.

Be careful resonators don't always help. they can hurt. My 3" with a Catco 3" cat (same as the magnaflow) and a 3" Dynomax didn't really drone, yet a friend of mine is running a 3" racecat, 3" dynomax bullet resonator and 3" Dynomax muffler and his resonates like all hell. Only real differences between mine and his are the cats and the presence of that resonator -- the rest is done exactly the same, even done by the same people and mufflers in the same place.

3" turbo back, no cat, one BSR straight through muffler and one small resonator just before tip...

NO drone :)

Or.. Peel 'n Seal the trunk. No Drone.

Hey, good to see you around again Miles! <thread jack> How are the HIDs working out?

I have EST 3" downpipe and 2.5" catback all hooked up... clean install no leaks.. but there is droning between 2000-2600 rpm and it's annoying... you notice it more when your on the throttle than just cruising in that rpm...

I'm trying to think of a fix but haven't arrived at a solution yet...

I believe drone/resonance is a function of the exhaust you use and anything before that that is freer flowing will simply magnify that sound...

from what I've seen 3" downpipe - 3" exhaust to a dynomax muffler works best here... but how is the flow on that setup?

About as good as it gets. The perforated core of the Dynomax is actually 3.5" ID. It outflows pretty much everything.

I've got drone also. 3"DP to 3" metal core race cat (don't remember the brand...got it from JHEIII) to 3" Vibrant Ultra Quiet resonator (my ass) to 2.5" EST duals. Although my resonator placement is not the ideal spot for quieting it down (I hear the farther back the better, but with the duals, I couldn't fit any 2.5" bullet style resonators on the right side). That's what has me interested in Joe Essaye's setup in the other exhaust thread, his muffs (lol) are all the way at the back. If I put a resonator in the stock muffler location, I wonder if that would be the ticket. But then going 3" all the way back may negate all that.

I'll be going for the sound deadening in the trunk and under the rear seats. BTW, I hear that Peel N Seal stinks (literally) and may puddle in extreme heat. Anyone from personal experience? PM me, please.

Peel'n'seal will stink for the first half year or so, but it will go away. I don't have any smell at all any more. I never experienced any puddling, it owld never get hot enough for that to happen.

my entire car, including entire headliner is peeled 'n' sealed

3 inch downpipe with cat, as well as a 2.5 inch cat back with resonator/muffler/resonator set up will not drone at all.

Hi Josh,

typically sport catbacks have a muffler followed by a resonator.... my EST exhaust has a muffler and a resonator... I see you have TWO resonators?!!

where exactly is your first resonator? is it right after the catalytic? this sounds like a custom setup? curious to how you got it in there..

I looked under my car yesterday and I have the EST 3" downpipe with removable race cat.. .now the pipe that comes off the cat is about 17" before

it mates with the EST exhaust... this is the same pipe that contains the secondary 02 sensor...

I was thinking about cutting that pipe right after the sensor and installing some type of resonator and then connecting it to the exhaust but I don't know if they make resonators that are at most 4" in diameter.... I don't think anything more than 4" will fit in that location?

interested to hear your setup, muffler brand..... is this on your S70 T5... ?

cheers

P,

P,

Although this was not in any of my cars, this was in another person's car on the board, and I have ridden in the car. No drone whatsoever. The first resonator was just after that cat, followed by the muffler, and the last resonator was right before the bumper. Here are some pictures. Btw, this is all Magnaflow.

I also have a WOT driveby video.
