Kinda Dumb Heater Core Question.

Recommended Posts

If my core is leaking, will it continue in the summer when I'm not using the heater?

yea, it'll flow thru the core weather you use the heater/ac or don't even turn anything on. ask me how i know...i still need to shampoo my carpet to get the coolant out...

just do a bypass if you don't have the money for a new core yet.

Before you decide to change the heater core, make sure this screw is tight. http://img49.exs.cx/img49/108/driversideleakscrews.jpg

If the case where the heater core resides does not look like the one in the picture, it could be just the seals that are tighttened by the screw shown in the picture with a green arrow. I had a leak there when it was freezing outside. The screw was not tight at all.

if you dont mind me stealing your pic.. the other places you want to look are here in the blue rectangles.

sometime the plastic piece behind the accelerator pedal cracks and looses its seal too, and the part that goes into the plastic piece which connects into the heater core looses its seal.

Also note that in most cases if you have a leak it should funnel down the black rubber piece going through the duct.

I would suggest if your going to do the heater core..you might want to get these parts too as they tend to be brittle and will most certainly crack while you remove the core itself unless your very careful.

Hmmm....I'm gonna have to take the panel off this weekend and check it out.

The coolant all seems to be on the lower left part of the driver's floorpan, away from the center console, too. It's weird that I don't feel any other areas wet...and it is definitely coolant, because it's sticky. Is that just the lowest point or something?

My HVAC lights flashed before, too, right around when I noticed the wetness.I guess I had left it on RECIRCULATE all the time, too,so I've left that switched off.

I already had ordered a heater core and o-rings from FCPGroton,so I have them ready, but it would be nice if it was just a loose screw. Thanks for the help, guys.

FYI, you may want to check under the carpet on both sides and the rear. I had green slime under all 4 foot areas. replaced the front pads, reused the rear. the foam does not want to give up the green stuff easily.... Good luck!

I had my core replaced but I still seem to get anti-freeze in the same spot mentioned above.. Talked to my service guy he said it is probably the fire wall connection.. Who knows.. I have anti-freeze on my floors and it looks retarded and smells bad as well.. any ideas on getting it out once I get it all fixed?

O-rings, FCP again....

The carpets are not bad, powerwash them a couple of times. The foam pads are a PIA. I didn't have time to do them right so I replaced them with carpet padding... so far, so good, no more stink!

I took the mat and removed the carpet out of the car - just driver's side and put them in a public washer with detergent.
