It is a small cone shape piece of screen in the middle of the gasket. I still have the CEL on (check engine light) but the dealer says that the system might reset it self and go out. Car runs great. Put an K&N cold air intake tube with K&N filter $68.00 from AJ usa.com for the s40. gave it more power. Turbo sounds great and works better. Did you ckeck to make sure the 2 coils are okay. look for cracks in the side of them were the coil plugs onto the plugs. I had to replace both of mine. Change fuel filter to, can't hurt. I have new T belt,T belt tensioner, exhaust cam gear with VVT hub,VVT solenoid,VVT gasket with screen,2 new coils,4 new platnum plugs, fuel filter,2 new head light assem complete,4 new halg. bulbs. all this since Oct 06. 89,000 miles.Oh I forgot a lot of $$$$$$ spent. added aftermarket options: new pioner radio with 8 6 inch infinity speakers with tweeters, kenwood amp and dual 10 inch subs. PS this is my kids car not mine. I just get to deal with it. kids are great!!!!! $$$$$$$

theForgottenone
DONT USE PLATINUM PLUGS!!!! thats a major no no, esp. on S40'sOEM plug is fine...as they're also platinium. Just don't use those Bosch +4 crap (or any from auto part stores)NGK-R work great also. Once my OEM wear out, I''ll put NGK copper plug with one degree colder in. Just don't use other crap brand or gimmich mutiple tip platinium plugs.....those are junk.

The CEL light went out Saturday April 21,2007.(2 weeks since the repair) The dealer said give it time, and the cam would reset it self, and it did. Now how long will it stay off????. I think a high quality oil filter, and marval mystery oil helped a lot. The oil filter you use is key!!, and the oil. By putting the marvals in makes the oil feel like a synthedic oil. It cleans and lubercates. I will keep you posted.

MrWinkey
Found the solve to the P0014 problem today.( I hope) Went to auto zone and still had the same code. I would like to mention one key symptom that I had. When the car was cold started great!!( as mention before), But!! when it was hot (driven about 10 - 15 miles, and sat for 1hr) started very hard. Problem: faulty fuel pressure regulater. How to check: The fuel PSI reg. is located on the S40 to the side of the throttle body.( under the small black cover held in place by two screws. A short rubber with plastic tube vacum hose leaves the valve, and connects below infront of the throttle body area. Remove it completly, turn it up side down tap it on your finger to see if gas comes out. Yes = bad valve no = good valve. How does this cause the code(P0014) that says cam is out of time?? easy: Gas leaks from fuel PSI reg. into cylinders via vacum hose causing a flooding situation (noticed black smoke when someone started it) You go to start engine and it turns over alot before starting. this causes low rpm long duration revalotions of the cam before ignition is reconized by computer. VVT works on start up based on oil PSI. Long crank time low RPM trips the VVT system and tells ECM that timing is off.(P0014) If engine starts right off it creates normal oil PSI sets VVT and completes cam / crank circuit. The held machanic (Bill) (certified and proven best volvo tec in Vermont by Volvo Corp)& machanics manager at Almartins Volvo in shelburn Vermont took me into the shop and did the diagnostic on the car right infront of me. He pulled the vac hose and I saw the gas come out. Siad he had (3) other cars do this, and it caused a P0014 code. changed the fuel PSI reg. and cars have not returned yet.(more than a year now) The dealer even called Volvo tec suport for help. Thank god Bill walked over when he had the free time, and ask about the symptoms. Had the solve to the problem first thing. Went to a restaurant on the way home had a bite to eat. came out 1 hr later car started first thing. Yes !!!!!!. As stated in another thread awhile back.... I said I don't understand how that code would be related to the FPR and you threw up a link to this thread...however we only find out the code returned? Not disrespecting ..but I kinda felt like you thought I was a horse's ass for stating that....It's cool but it was on my mind ...lol+1 for Winkey ;)
Guest Lemmon Head
Hey is the light still off? I have the exact same symptoms on my 2000 S40. P0014 code and hard hot start.Took into dealer today and he replaced the VVT solenoid and VVT gasket. He said the CEL would probably come back on and I will have to replace the CVVT Hub assembly. While replacing hub, he recommended doing Timing belt and Tensioner (cheaper because he's already in there doing hub).I'm wondering if this will fix my hard hot start problem or will I have to also replace the fuel pressure regulator as well???First Volvo I have owned, big $$$$ in repairs.

Replace FPR to solve your hard to start while the engine is already warm (hot). You can do this yourself. The part is expensive.
