I Had A Sad Realization Today

Who said Volvos aren't fast? I've had my 98 S70 T5 (100% stock - no mods) up to 250 KM/hr for extended highway driving... where I hit the rev limitter... I got smoked by an older V70R wagon on the highway. I am not sure about the STI, but I know the WRX has a governor at 180 KM/hr. The STI is as near a track ready car as you can buy and has no comforts and is plastic and the interior looks cheap. Even with 240,000 km the brick is still comfortable on a long stint...

I've done the 1/4 mile at a drag strip and posted a near 16 second quarter at 97 MPH and 0 to 60mph (100km/hr) in about 6.8 (this is an automatic too!) while my buddy in his 5.0 Mustang GT did about the same...my reaction time was bad, I haven't been able to get that time again... I am a second and change slower now that the car is a bit older... but I would not consider that slow by any standards.

Sport vs Econo would not give you a significant performance change, just shift points under normal driving, if you pin it is should still kick down a gear the same. There are fast cars that are crap and not so crappy cars that aren't as fast... if you want an impressive zero to 60 time get a rice rocket or one of those hideous SVT Neons with over 300hp. Just my $0.02 for what it is worth. Either way... it is always nice to dream of a faster car as the urge to go fast and push a car to its limits is an adrenaline rush.

Trying to make my Volvo go fast is stupid. Yesterday I got to test drive a 2007 Subaru WRX STI. One of 800 in North America, I think. Everyting about that car is amazing. Subaru has everything Volvo has, only better. It's sad because I love my car.

I also test drove a 95 T-5R down at the dealership. I must say, I was extremely dissappointed. When we were pulling back into the dealership I realized it was is friggen economy mode.:arob: I didn't want to bother them anymore since I wasn't going to buy the car anyway so I just left it at that.

I realized how I love my Volvo compared to Subaru. My buddy has a 2003 WRX,working on it making it about 400 awhp. He asked me one day to come down and help him out putting some stuff on. This is what I saw, Most of the bolts were rusted, clamps rusted, thin framework, never seen a crank pulley rusted so bad, pretty much felt like I was going to brake the car just looking at it. (this guy babys the hell out of his car btw)

His car is only 3-4 years old.....

Then tonight I was putting on a FMIC on my car, took off the bumper and the aluminum underside. All the bolts came out no problem, no rust on any of them, everything solid, felt like i was working on a brand new car (other than all the salt under it)

and my car is.... 11 years old.... thats about 4 times as old, and in so much better condition, its all about the quality in how they build the cars.

Now imagine your STI in 11 years... it will be blown up, and I will still be driving my Volvo in like new condition.

Here's how I see it. My neighbor has a nice EVO so I didn't want an EVO. I looked at and drove the STi. No cabin room. Harsh ride. Major road noise right through that this sheet metal door skin!!! About the same price as the S60R. I went with the "R" cause you get a whole lotta more car.

Final note. Which car would you rather roll 3 times???

How can you compare S60R against Evo? I don't know where did you get about the same price. New EVo is 29-30k. s60r is 40k. S60R awd is slow; no wonder there was a talk that Swedish Mike was doing conversion of awd to fwd

+1 on that observation. Subaru uses really poor material choices in their assemblies. Their 4-6 year old cars are showing more prone to rust and corrosion problems than my 23 year old 240. I noticed they finally caught up with 1960's technology and have gone to 4 wheel disk brakes in the last year or so....maybe '06 model year???

They (Subarus) feel fast inside because of the taught shocks and dense padding in the seats. The original poster was comparing the speed feel of the Subaru versus a used Volvo. 80mph will feel faster in the Subaru when making that comparison. Don't get me wrong. Subarus are better than most makes out there but it is not the same and would loose to a Volvo.

lol WRX motors aren't running on jesus juice, they have good launches and their top end is pretty weak. they aren't impossible to take stock, but if they know anything about WRXs, they will have the car modded, even lightly will put bus lengths on our cars.
