How To Change Oil In S/v40 (1996-2004)

Recommended Posts

I know this is a very basic how-to but there are people ask me so I did a write up for them in another forum.

Here is a list of items/tools you need for this procedure.

1. Rachet wrench with 17mm

2. Oil filter adapter opener. You can get one from IPD for $6.

3. Oil filter can be purchase from several website on my sticky thread or go to your dealer and pay the over price $7. IPD also carry them at reasonable price which is where I get mine at.

4. 6 quarts of oil (You only use about 5.5 - 5 3/4 quarts). Oil viscosity is 5W-30. You can purchase any brand or synthetic as you wish. I typically use Castrol GTX.

5. Good mechanic jack (capable of 4000lbs) or you can use your OEM jacks and a jackstand (cinder blocks or couple of old wheels stacked upon each other can be subsitute) - OPTIONAL but recommended.

6. Oil pan

7. Latex gloves (if you don't want to get your hands dirty) - OPTIONAL

8. Paper towels, dirty cloth towels or your POS clothes you no longer have a use for.

9. New oil drain nut washer - OPTIONAL

10. A funnel

11. Empty milk jugs

12. Magnetic oil pan nut (from IPD if you want to replace your OEM one) OPTIONAL

1. Make sure you engine has cool down first. Typically about 15-20 mins after you shut off your engine unless you want to get your hands have 1st degree burns.

Pop the hood open and pull the oil dipstick and open the oil filler cap. This is to help all the oil flows down to the oil pan quickly and as much as possible.

2. Jack the car up and put a jack stand on the passenger side

3. Locate the oil drain nut and loosen it.

From this picture, you turn counter-clockwise.

Another angle so you can find it easy. Notice you can see the oil filter in this picture also.

4. Loosen the oil drain nut and remove it. This is where the latex gloves come handy. Clean the nut and put on the new washer (optional) if you have one when you re-installing it. You should able to re-use it unless it's severaly damage or in condition that unable to give the protection of oil leaking from the oil pan.

5. Let the it oil drain out for about ~10 min. You can proceed to remove the oil filter using the adapter with a rachet wrench (counter-clockwise if looking at the oil filter housing from the floor to the sky direction).

Loosen it first until you can turn it by hand. Remove the rachet wrench from the adapter. Using your hand, slowly turn the oil filter plastic housing sideway (after it disengage with the paper filter) so the old oil will drain into the oil pan instead of getting spill all over your hands. Afterward, remove the paper housing and let it drip out all the old oil for about 5 minutes.

6. Remove the rubber band ring on the oil filter housing with a small flat head screwdriver or a tool like I have. Install the new material that come with your oil filter.

7. Clean the oil filter housing inside and outside. You also need to clean the oil filter housing on the car. You can use any type of materials listed above. I just use paper towels (any brand would be OK).

8. Insert the new paper oil filter (slightly pre-oil the filter with the new oil). It doesn't matter which end as it's exactly identical. It will fit snugly and will not fall off.

9. Tighten the oil filter housing by hand first until you can no longer twist it around. Attach the oil filter housing adapter and use the wrench to tighten it. Once the plastic housing lip is match evenly with the metal oil pan, then you can stop as shown on this picture.

Volvo recommendation torque specs is 25Nm. For some reason, my torque wrench shows insansely number correspondence to the lbs/foot range so I never follow it. I just know when to stop as the display on the above picture.

10. Reinstall the oil pan drain nut back. Tightenning it by hand first until you can no longer twist it. This is also prevent cross-threading. Use the rachet wrench and tighten it about 3/4 of a full rotation of the nut, that's usually tight enough. Volvo specs is 25lb/ftsfor oil pan drain nut. Wipe any excess old oil residue on the bottom of oil pan housing and surrounding area of the oil pan drain nut.

11. Put a piece of paper towels or old cloth towel around the oil filler cap location. Put 5 - 5 1/4 quarts of new oil in (use a funnel if you have one). I change my oil every 3K miles. If you use synthetic, you can change it around 5K-6K.

12. Turn on the engine and let it idle until it get to operation temperature or drive around the blocks. Refill or top off additional oil as necessary. Pour old oil into the milk jugs and put it out for Recycle on your weekly trash schedule.
