-mogwai
I am trying to replace one of the front sway bar bushings (or "brackets") on an S40. So far I cannot seem to get the lower and upper portions of the bushing to slide into place because there is not enough clearance to push it back by hand or with a tool. I also tried to line everything up at the point where the upper bushing bolts down on the engine subframe, but the bolt will not thread because I cannot join the two pieces together in that awkward position. Is there some trick to this? Does the entire sway bar have to be removed? If so, does the steering rack have to be removed to get the sway bar out?
starfish
The rack just needs to be unbolted and the rear of the subrame lowered to remove the stabilizer bar. The bushing halves are fairly tough going on. Try hosing the new bushings down with some good rust penetrant like PB Blaster, that stuff makes rubber really slippery long enough to grab a pair of channel-locks and squeeze the halves together.
