im in the process of doing my pcv system and i noticed while cleaning my intake the port in my intake that goes to my egr valve was COMPLETELY plugged up. I had to use a screwdriver to break thru the carbon and dig out the port.

My question is... with this port being clogged will it cause my pcv sys. to clog also ? will this cause my crankcase pressure problem ? if not, what probs. does it cause on a volvo ? thanks ....

i should be getting my parts in towmorrw and should have her back together in a few days. I did some dressing up to the engine compartment and ill post pics to see what you guys think B)

I am not as knowledgeable as other members of the board, and in a way I have asked the same question a few days ago. What I have learned is that EGR is intended to assist in the control of nitrous oxides, by allowing a certain amount of exaust fumes back into the intake thru the EGR in order to chemically assist in the reduction of those pollutants.

You found a clogged hole in the intake manifold. Everybody does when working on the PCV. The important thing is that the EGR valve may also be clogged. If you haven´t done that, you should clean it internally with throttle body cleaner.

There is no way to take it appart, so you will have to let the product disolve whatever is in there and make sure everything comes out, including crud particles that may become dislodged in the cleaning process.

Also, I have learned that during normal cleaning of the throttle body, one can clean the EGR hole with a piece of wire and a small brush, by removing the plastic vacumm tower on top of the throttle body. The EGR hole is right under the openning a bit to the passenger side. I do it once a year, and never had any issues with the EGR.

Hope it helps you some. Good luck!

thank you for the input ice... ive cleaned everything !! the throttle body, egr, intake, e.t.c. .. since i have it all apart i was just wondering if that port being clogged in my intake would cause my crankcase pressure problem i was having. when i took my oil trap off the hole going into the block was not clogged at all so i was wondering why i was building pressure in my crankcase. I guess the oil trap is plugged internally i havent torn it open to look at the guts yet. the car has about 200k on it and the pcv has never been done..
