1999 S70 Front End Clunking

My 1999 S70 has developed a "clunking" noise, right front wheel area, happens when going over rough spots at between 10-40 mph. It goes away almost completely if brakes are applied; gets worse when turning left. My dealer has replaced engine mount and upper spring seat and the noise is still there. I replaced front rotors and pads myself, noise still there. Any ideas???

stabilizer links ??

It sounds to me like it could be a worn, or improperly adjusted/tightened right front wheel bearing, since it gets worse when you turn to the left. I am not familiar with your model to know if their is a wheel bearing adjuster nut that needed to be removed in order to replace your rotor? If so, perhaps it wasn't adjusted properly when it was re-tightened.

Try jacking up your car, and checking for play in the wheel/tire. If it rocks at all from top to bottom it is probably the wheel bearing not adjusted tight enough (although it could also be other suspension components). If it rocks from left to right, then it would more likely be a problem in the steering linkage, especially the tie-rod ends.

Wheel bearings can be adjusted reasonably well by feel, if you have done it a couple times. But the right way is to use a dial-type run-out gauge (or to have a shop do it).

S70 wheel bearings are not adjustable, its a sealed unit that bolts on the the back of the spindle..You would know this if you've ever changed one...He should check swaybar links, check for loose wheel lugs, check for worn out strut hat, these are the common failures on this model...Checking the ball joint also would be a good thing.

Possibly....Or they replaced the spring seat but did they do the bearing cap? Just a thought and I really see no failure rate with them at all. Could be loose axle nut ? Almost have to drive the car and feel/hear it to tell ya' tough call. The 80 series has a TSB on clunking and the resolution is an o-ring kit for the rear subframe bushings shifting up and down. Don't know if it applies to the 70 series and I personally have never seen it but I have done a few on the 80 series. It's purely a guess but a good one? ;)

Bearing noise? I would think the desciption would be more of a growl noise not clunking. Mr Winkey has a good point. Maybe the spring seat isn't quite tight or the axle nut could be loose. Have seen them go loose even if no hub work has been done. Links are also a good and failure reliable way to go.

Did you ever get a resolution to this problem? I have a '99 v70R (~150k miles) that has been doing the exact same thing on the left side. It gets worse in right turns. I have changed both sway bar links (twice) and both inner tie rod ends with no improvement. I may try the lower control arm next - maybe a bad ball joint. Really hate to shotgun the problem but the rattle also bugs me.
