Power Steering Leak

it seems that im leaking a fair amount of fluid from the passenger end of the steering rack boot(level goes from topped off to barely touching dipstick in 2 days, about 25 miles). Is this common and is it possible it is a seal that can be replaced or am I doomed to have to buy a new steering rack :o ?

Are you sure that is where it's leaking if so it's not real common. A more common leak is at the reservoir or the crimped hose fitting to it.

if it's leaking out of the boot you need a rack, plain and simple. if you punch a little hole in the boot and fluid pisses out, you will confirm the fault. have seen it quite a few times, but i've worked for volvo for over 10 years.

The reman rack from VOLVO list out @ $1013.00..... :o

alot of times you also need updated pressure and cooling lines to install the replacement rack cuz VOLVO has changed the design of them.

never really had good luck with used racks.....

I'd follow MrWinkey's theory of the hose crimp @ the reservoir.....very common problem.

will poking a little hole cause any other problems if that is not it? Also how much does a new rack run or is used a viable option(id install it myself)

a little hole with a pick won't cause any problems, and if your pretty sure it's from the rack you'll be getting a new one anyhow.

it's true the clamps on the res hoses leak, but not as much as you are loosing. if the res is empty in 2 days i think you'll know if it's pouring out of the res clamp or suction hose. you've got a pressureized leak.

i'll check both- the res isnt empty in 2 days, it just went from the full mark on the dipstick to 1/8th in an inch from the bottom of the dipstick

well if it's leaking from the suction hose or res clamps then you'll have fluid at the rack and above on the right side, if there is no fluid above the boot or leak source then it's dripping from up above. the clamp at the suction hose on the pump is very common to feel like it's tight, but it's really stripped and not torqued enough. if you can twist that hose around easily, then it's loose. just run your finger under the clamp if it's wet or real greasy like then it needs attention.

Well that is what it kinda sounds like but I wanted to cover the simpler issue's first and I guess I didn't have the heart to tell him that . I have worked on Volvo's for over 18 yrs ;)

so my car is leaking fluid profusely. I pulled the boot back and oil went everywhere. its spitting out of the end of the rack through the little hole near the end of the area that the boot conseals. Im less than pleased. I assume theres no other alternative other tha rack replacement? seal kit maybe? some sort of snow man's chance in hell?

this sux
