98 S70 Tank Fuel Pump Disassembly

Modus

Recommended Posts

Okay so.... I'm 8 months into my diagnosis of my PO442 code, = small evap leak detected

Dang code has been one big nightmare.

Replaced fill tube gasket, clamp and rollover valve, no go

Replaced the purgevalve in the front by the battery, No go there.

I repaired one cracked vacuum line off the charcol canister, again... no go but fixed the gas smell from inside the car

so my last resort, I smell gas comming from the Intank fuel pump nut on top of the tank

Begining to fill the tank at the pump i do not recieve pressure from releasing the tank cap. I think that's a clue.

What is the best way to take off the large plasic nut, with out using the volvo specail spanner tool.

And do the rubber lines just pop off?

I'm going to attempt replacing the gasket without dropping the tank

Any tips of the trade? this way i don't get too fustrated.

Thanks

Sadly, I did this last night. Screwdriver with hammer/mallet works but its best if you have two people doing it with one 180 degrees from the other. I had gas leaking out of the tank after I filled it up all the way, turned out that the gasket around the fuel pump assembly was trashed. I just put a new fuel pump in about a month ago and I think I screwed up somehow on the install. The fuel line connections are quick connects so just reach in and pull on the bottom of them and they should slide off. When reinstalling make sure you get them on straight because the little Orings in the middle can get out of place if you try to force them back on. Fairly easy job which my brother and I did in about 45 mins.

It's hard to slide off.

Try using a screw driver (and tape up the end), but there is very little clearance, and the thing is pretty tight.

Or try some kind of pronged tool if you have it. That works best. I actually had a pronged garden tool which was very nice.

True, I have a pair of 90 degree needle nose pliers, perfect for the job.
