89 740gle Help With New Stereo

ok so ive done plenty of hu swaps from factory to aftermarket and have always been able to figure out the wiring scheme and such but just yesterday I got a 1989 740 GLE with a stock hu. So i pulled it out to see what the wiring is like and now im totally stuck on what to do... hopefully someone can point me in the right direction. So there is a harness with 6 wires coming off of it. white, white w/ yellow stripe, blue, green w/ red stripe, orange, and green. now I assume this is for power ground and thos few other misc wires... but now for the speakers there is a 6 pin din connector... and im like what the heck man. so does anyone here know if there is a way to put in a aftermarket without having to but a wiring harness or something... i going for doing this myself with spending no money at all so any help of links to previous topics or wiring diagrams would help alot... thanks in advance guys.

I've never worked on the older cars, and you'll find that's true with many (but not all) users on this site. A single connector + DIN6 sounds like a remote amp setup in a newer car (93 to 00+) but I don't know if this is an option in the older ones. DIN-mini is used for CD players, but that seems unlikely on an 89. I think some of the older cars just use one connector. If you do have an Amp, you'll probably want to use it, because at least in the 850s, it's actually pretty powerful. Posting pictures of what's going on would also be a help.

Also, wiring harness kits tend to exist for the volvos, and they're typically inexpensive, so most people recommend using them as opposed to cutting off the stock plug. While in your car the chances you'll regret losing the stock plug aren't too great, getting proper connections made in a tight space can prove very challenging... when you can buy something like this. That's the first one I found searching eBay, better / cheaper ones might be possible to find. If that's the correct connector for your car, it should at least provide power in the case of a remote amp, and it very well could provide speaker connections too. If your connector is different I don't know... like I said I've never worked on those older cars.

Either way, good luck!

A 6 pin DIN is definetely an AMP. The CD changers usually have more contacts.

There are DIN to RCA adapters available. Keep it clean!

As for the main connector, I would also reccommend the A/M adapter. The cleaner you

keep your install, the better things work out later. It also provides accurate ID of the leads.

If you want to make one

http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?s...c=39067&hl= (Will have to be modified a little for your purposes, IE, use a DIN female instead of a din male).

Rule of thumb: Do not cut anything on a stock wiring setup unless you have absolutely no other option. It's hard as hell to get a good connection, and hard as hell to upgrade. In two years if you decided to upgrade the HU, or lord knows what else, it will be a royal mess.

Also, a pinout wouldn't help you on the DIN connector because as soon as you cut the DIN Connector off all you'd have is a bunch of wires in no particular order. If they were color coded you might be able to figure it out, but definitely NOT worth the headache.

However, I'm not entirely convinced an 89 comes with a stock amp. I guess it's possible, I've just never heard of it. You might want to wait until someone who actually owns a 740 replies before you start cutting, or at least do things like follow the DIN cable and see what it connects to...

Amen Brother! That is an Excellent Rule of Thumb.

Keep the car wiring STOCK, when ever possible!

Car=Many thousands of dollars

Stereo=Many less dollars

And then there's the "Next Guy Principle". As soon as you become, "The Next Guy", You'll get it...

As for the amp, I haven't been into a 740 dash for a awhile, but I do recall several with amps going

through the shop. It should be an Alpine, standard DIN configuration. 4 hots, a signal ground and a turn-on.

Have Fun! And don't forget a Sub...

yeah theres an amp in there, its under the driverside knee pad, the wiring harness goes for about 2 ft to the connector, i found this out when i got my 745, the kid just cut the fucking thing, so when i went to the graveyard i pulled a hu with about 4 ft of wire after the hu adapter just to make sure i had enough, when i followed it back i found the connector and just plug and played it. and the factory amp blows, pull it and hard wire that mother fucker, youll thank me later,

well i got everything all hooked up without using a harness adapter and i kept the old harness in perfect shape. The harness can snap open to reveal where the wires are put in the slots so i opened them laid in my wires and snapped it shut again and it holds great... then i just plugged the harness back into the mini amp and then did the same over at the hu power source then all works great... Now im just pissed cause my sub amp wont stay on cause i cant find a good grounding point... all the dam metal is freaking galvanized gold... so yeah a bit of sanding and im sure i get a good contact
