850 Driver Seat Creak

sion

Recommended Posts

Now this is a problem I have in both my 850's...

I've checked the obvious - the seat runner bolts are tight. If i pull on the seat back from the rear seat, I can replicate the noise I hear when driving.

Before I remove the seats, is there a common problem I should know about? Do the runners come loose where they bolt to the seat?

Thanks in advance!

You could try generously lubricating every hinge and track you can find in the seat brackets, especially where the seat bottom meets the seat back. It helped for me. Also, if you find it comfortable you could try adjusting the seat by tilting it a little backwards (so you sink into the seat a little better). Seems to help with the clunking.

Those cursed creaking seats! <_<

Seems once a year or so I remove the driver's seat, tighten down every friggin' screw I can find, and lube (spray lithium grease) every joint and the tracks.

I need to do it again, the creaks drive me nutty

Ah, so it's not just my cars! :D

It's a creak in my R, very annoying, & more of a clunk in the T-5. They're definitely relatives though...

It must be excessive play between the runners then, or the base is not rigid enough. I'll have a good look at the problem soon & post again if I find a fix worth mentioning.

Thanks for your replies guys.

Re: Creaking seat...My 97 850 GLT has done the same thing since 64K when I bought it. It actually feels as though it moves in the track. The Volvo dealership told me it would be about $1k to rebuild the seat as they thouroughly checked it out and said part of the frame had actually cracked. Well for a grand I've lived with it for about 70K... Now the question?

Can I swap seats from a 2000 X/C into my 97 850? The talk around the IPD garage sale was that they would bolt in, but there was an issue with the belts; no one could recall the issue...Any ideas if they will indeed swap and what that seatbelt issue might be?

Thanks in advance!!

$1K to rebuild a seat!? That sounds outrageous! Then again, nothing should surprise these days...

I don't know about the seat swap, but there has to be a far cheaper & logical solution to this problem. And if a crack in the seat frame is also a common problem, this can easily be welded surely?

I am now inspired, therefore I'll remove one of my seats this w-end for a thorough lookover. ;)

there is an issue with the seat belt bracket. It's different in the 850s and x70s. PM "beachnut" regaring this issue. I ended up having to get him some brackets at a Junkyard. He WAS able to get X70 seats to work in his 850 though.

I have the Same problem with my R Seats, There is a bolt that tightens on the seat that gets worn. You can use a sleeved bolt to fix the problem. MB had a problem onthe E-class That was their fix. I have not had the time to look for the bolt.

I don't know about the seat swap, but there has to be a far cheaper & logical solution to this problem.

There is a cheap solution--I used it with success on my old 850, and will probably use it eventually on the S70.

It costs a maximum of $0.20, and maybe 5 minutes.

The problem is usually wear in the runners, so the whole seat rocks/tilts in the runners. Here's what you do: you know how the runners are bolted to the floor with two bolts each--one at the front and one at the rear? So there are four bolts total? OK, loosen all four bolts, then completely remove the front left bolt and the right rear bolt. Take two U.S. nickels and wedge them between the floor and the seat bracket at the two corners where you removed bolts (in effect slightly lifting the seat runners at those two opposite corners). Bolt the brackets back down tightly. This compensates for the worn runners and should remove most of your seat clunking.
