Antennas

So last weekend I installed my PA system which runs off of a Midland CB radio. I've been having lots of fun with the PA, but i'd like to get into the CB side of it. Does anyone know any alternatives for one of those big ass antennas sticking off of my roof? I know reception on the inside would be horrible, but are there any sugestions?

I'm pretty sure I've seen "through the glass" CB antennas like the old school cellphone ones... that won't be TOO ugly. CB is really low frequency (like 27 or 29 MHz) so that means it wants a really BIG antenna to perform well.

Depending on how bad you want good CB reception you could install a trailer hitch and mount one back there, or get a huge-ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD magnetic mount one which you would put up temporarily when you wanted to use the CB, and either use the "through the glass" one the rest of the time (with an antenna switch), or not use the CB. Also, never leave a magnetic antenna on your car all the time. It's bad for the antenna, and your paint.

If you're using CB to listen to truckers, etc - that's about all you can do. Installing antennas sideways is really bad for their reception, as is inside the car. If you're using your CB for motorcade purposes, consider a FRS-based radio, they're much higher frequency (UHF) and will do much better. I have a hand-held set that can get a realistic 3 miles (well, they're UHF ham radios but same thing really) and the same "through the glass" antenna would be full wavelength, and give you kick-ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD reception.

Yeah, i've seen those window mount antennas, but I dont want to stick anything to the tint if I dont have to. If theres nothing that is small out there with good reception, i'll just use it for the PA function.

There are amplifiers and amplified antennas out there that you can buy. Really just depends how much you are looking to spend. If you are willing to spend a couple hundred dollars on an antenna you can easily find one that will fit your needs.

F that...I was just looking for something relatively small that I could mount somewhere and get decent reception...but i'd never spend hundreds of dollars on something like that.

PA it is

To say stuff like monkey and ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD you have to pay some $ and get one of these. I think the filter's off completely in "off topic", but I don't know for sure.

Thats why you see most people with those big jerk whip antennas.

(we can't say a$?--------------------------------------/\ )

Even a good whip antenna won't be cheap, one that will stand up to the elements, have good signal characteristics, bla bla bla could still be over $100. Signal boosters / amplified antennas will help with reception, but they're expensive, and they rarely help with transmission (without violating FCC rules, at least). Even then, they still benefit from a good mounting location, somewhere up high, preferably with a ground plane of some sort.
