98 S70 Speaker Sizes

Ok, so before the flaming starts, I will say that I have done my research, but have gotten mixed answers.

1998 s70 GLT 8 speakers total.

3.5" on the dash

6.5" on the front and rear doors

8" on the back deck

Is this correct? I went to several stereo places, some said the front ones were 5.25" and the back were 6.5" and the rear deck was 6.5" Some websites say their are 6X9" in the back, which their is not. So not I dont know the sizes.

So I was hoping for some sort of confirmation on the sizes from somone who has the exact same car as me. Or knows the sizes.

I'm fairly sure (not 100%, but pretty close) that the doors are 6.5". I've been in many S70s, but never pulled the panels to check. 5.25" is the 850 size, and I know the S70's are bigger.

Don't worry about the dash speakers, the only thing you might want to install up there is tweeters, and those you just mount as good you can under the trim. Installing a 3.5" "full range" speaker up there will sound like stuff. don't waste your time and money. Many people leave them empty.

Rear deck I don't have a clue, but I know it's not 6x9". In the 850's some people have managed to get 6x9"s to fit with some cutting and banging, but it's definitely not drop-in. I'll let someone with an S70 answer that.

www.crutchfield.com

EDIT- I stand corrected even they seem to be confused Apparently no aftermarket speakers fit exactly right. They list the largest size speakers that will fit on the site though.

Well that gets me close enough. 6.5" for the doors. Its just weird because the front ones look smaller than the back ones, but maybe its just how the grill fits over them. Yeah the only speakers I would replace would be the front door speakers and the rear deck speakers. Unless someone suggests otherwise, the guy at my local stereo shop said that you dont want to replace the back door speakers, ahs somthing to do will sound quality and flow. But then again eh is also the one that said the rear deck speakers are 6.5" which they are not.

In the event I'm wrong (which is possible) you could always measure the speakers you have now before you buy / install your new ones. That'd tell you for sure.

Replacing the rear door speakers isn't necessarily BAD, but it usually is unnecessary. Your high's will be muted, and for proper "sound imaging", you want most of your mids and highs coming from up front. If you put louder speakers in the back then up front, your system will sound weird, and will "pull" to the back.

There are tweets in the dash, stock.

Rear deck speakers are 8" with a tweeter mounted over them.

As far as I know, the only way to get to the speakers is to remove the door panel (someone please correct me if I'm wrong!)

As far as I know, this is the best write-up on how to do it on a S70 (Please post a better one if it exists)

Nope, the door panels in the S70 are similar, but don't require that you 'pop' the clips to get them to release. Just take the screw out of the handle and then CAREFULLY pull the piece of trim around the chrome door latch out. Then grab at the bottom of the panel and pull away from the door, toward you. The whole panel should release. At that point either remove or unclip the window switches and gas/trunk release on driver's door. Reinstall is reverse, get the window gasket seated and then push the panel against the door to snap all the clips back in.

I can take pix and show you if you need me to.

THANKS Jesus and 01V70 those pics helped alot!

I guess my last question will be, how did you get the rear deck speakers out?

- Pull down the seatbacks.

- Remove the two side bolsters by first pulling them forward until they unsnap and then slide up.

- The rear shelf also snaps into place. Just lift up and slide out.

- Unclip speaker wire from each speaker.

- Each speaker is held in with two bolts on the side facing the front of the car and two tabs in the rear.
