The Future Of Volvo...

Recommended Posts

I had a long debate with a friend today about Volvo...It seems that he and other highly critical people think that the company is in shambles. This particular person (An Audi enthusiast) thinks so until the point where he shows a great deal of disrespect for the present day Volvo line up questioning everything from interior quality to Volvo's choice of engines and power output (Specially the new S80).

What's most brought into question is why doesn't Volvo step up and make a car that directly competes with German competitors. My response is that Volvo is in a position that calls for it to be an "in-between" kind of car company, making a leap and establishing itself among the likes of BMW/Audi/Mercedes would be financially stupid and unfeasible step that would insure failure. At the same time Volvo is a company with tremendous amounts of potential.

I have many more thoughts on all this but I would really like to what you guys think and if any of you guys see Volvo has a company on the decline...If no one cares then screw this thread...

Dropping the R's and improving the S80 to me is a sign of trying to rebound, Volvo doesn't have bad sales outside of America. I think too much emphasis is put on what Volvo doesn't do instead of them making an effort to stay in their inbetween class and keeping to the group of buyers they have been aimed towards for the past 13 years or so...

If they are going down then it is the fault of their "place" in today's car industry. They can't make the leap into the German companies but they can't be cheap and Asia it up either. They are a victim of their own buyer's market.

good thing i shot my angst on SGI. self pity is fun!

who really cares what volvo does now? you all have old cars anyway...

Ridiculous, you were one of the many unlucky ones weren't you?

If a V8 Volvo is going to cost the same as a V8 BMW it better come to the table ready to compete. The only BMW the fully loaded S80 competes with are the ones BMW crash tests. Whenever I see a new S80 all I can wonder is if S80 stands for senior over 80 who cannot afford a Cadillac.

I see more promise for Volvo in their cross-overs and econ cars.

Unlike the S80 my horse is not tired.

The old S80s were fine. I hated the fake wood and plastic but overall they were ok. The new ones should be sold under the Ford name. They are the reincarnated bastard taurus.

That's where I think people's perception problems are...What new BMW V8 are you going to see start out at 49,000 (Like the S80 V8 AWD)? Regardless of that, when we look at things from a simple point of view the most expensive fully loaded Volvo will more than likely land you a little under $60,000. What other German car as big or bigger than the S80 can you say that about? Here if I'm reading you correct you mention the new 5 series (Which sucks, especially with interior lay out and quality) but not only is the Volvo not directly priced towards the 5 series, Volvo also does a pretty good job picking up the used car market with low resale value. It's just the way things work.

Audi serves as more of a threat to Volvo's well being IMO. But when it comes down to it, the quality and price of Volvo's has been and will continue to be inbetween those of Asian and Germany automakers.

Not at all, I'm smoking honesty

550 out the door is 60s. And you really think a Volvo has better resale than a BMW. LOL go look at the price on a 1 year old R or S80

Correct that, Volvo's make for a more affordable resale because they of their depreciation...S60R point in case, in my opinion one of the best buys out there for a used car with nice luxury and power and not too many miles...People will continue to buy it...One point to go against Volvo is the fact that the S60 is on a platform that is now 13 years old. That is kind of ridiculous and does hender Volvo but you can not forget this is a small Swedish company and you only need look at Saab to tell that these companies are very limited in what they can and can't do.

If Volvo wanted to compete with BMV or Audi they couldn't. They are a completely different make and car company, not to mention from the start before the Ford buyout Volvo Corporation has had to put it's money into MANY other places unlike most of it's competitors.

Cars depreciating 50% in a year is not good for a corporation. As for a 13 year old platform, most american cars are on a 60 year old platform.
