My Music Idea

Ok this might be over kill, but I'm super cheap so it sorta works hehe.

Recently I have been testing out using one of my laptops as an mp3 player for my car, because I'm super cheap and have a 1.50GB Laptop that works pretty decently for storing Mp3's just like an mp3 player, only thing is battery life, but I'm getting a inverter, so that solves that.

Anyways I have been thinking, well why use a laptop? I could technically mount a pc in the trunk(yeah I can get it so it doesn't bounce around to much), have a Wifi card in it, so I can upload music to it, then find a way to interface it inside of the vehicle, like maybe the laptop could use the PC in the trunk as a server, and just play it through the laptop.(using the network maybe with the wifi card). Or maybe a touch screen, or something inside the car.

Does that sound crazy, or have others thought of this??

Oh and I know they have music "kegs" out there too, but they are SO much money.

i think a more viable option is to utilize your laptop with the inverter and get an external hard drive adapter

that way, you save a TON of space in your trunk, and you can watch movies at the same time (provided your laptop can do it efficiently)

That is what I did last summer, so you're not entirely crazy. I used an old laptop and an external 20G USB drive (had the drive, bought the USB case for cheap.) I know of a few others who have done it too. I built an aux-input adapter to the radio that plugs into the cd-changer port. When you press buttons on the HU, the commands are interpereted and sent to the laptop via serial port, and a winamp plugin controls the music. The music is then fed to the radio through the cd-changer port. Full playlist and browsing capabilities are available via a backlit LCD mounted on the dash. The laptop wakes up and suspends when I press rnd on the radio. The best part about this is that I kept the stock radio, and the only thing you see is the home-made looking display on top, to it's not a real temptation to theives. Living in the city it's important.

the winamp plugin is here (open source, I have had to improve it a little).

Good luck!

dr lava, holy stuff, that is monkeyin awesome hehe. Ya know what you got to do, is get a single din receiver, and put the screen under the new HU. Dude if you cleaned that stuff up it would LOOK SO TIGHT hehe, that stuff is awesome. Oh my god, I love you hehe. Do you have AIM, so we can discuss this a little more indepth?? Heh, that is great

Torque brothah, where is your sense of adventure ??? :) I actually plan on doing almost exactly what dr. lava did, only mount the screen in my open din spot, and the laptop comes up front I think, under the passenger seat, depending on how it looks under there space wise. When it is done I will post pics, but don't hold your breath. Heh I wouldn't want anyone to suffocate, I hope to have it done by years end.

Anitantium, thats true, but the laptop I got could never handle it hehehe.

I think it will look super nice heh, but I wish it were longer, so whatever I get will be negative back lit, hopefully longer so i can fit it into the din slot nicely
