1998 S70 Code Reader

autozone and many other car parts stores will read check engine lights for free. You do not want to spend money buying one.

Really? I thought it was worth the $100 to buy one. When my car is limping along, I dont have to go to Autozone to check the codes and limp back home. Now I have my reader in the back seat and ready to read/clear codes on the fly. Came in handy when I had a misfire 40 miles from home.

True you can get codes read for free at many parts stores, but maybe you do want to buy one. My car very rarely throws a code, so when it does I prefer to drive it as little as possible until I've scanned it.

You can get an OBDii code reader at those same stores, or buy one online. Innova Equus is a popular, mid-priced and pretty reliable model. Be careful with the cable, the pins tend to be pretty low quality in that price range (~$125).

Will it also turn off the CEL? I have bought a cheap one off ebay already, and it is unable to. If you look closely alot of them don't say they work on Volvos. My guess is ME7 screws with them.

None of the OBDII reader that I know of will turn off an SRS light. There is a tool made by Draper that will turn off the service light and the SRS light, provided the condition that set the SRS light is not still present.

The Innova 3030 that I referenced in my previous post will work with your Volvo and it will reset the CEL light.

Will this OBDII scanner read/reset Volvo specific codes? An example being the Service light that comes on every 10k miles?

Does anyone know if with a ODBII scanner, you can check the true mileage of the car? My car has the little black box but I'm looking at newer volvo's (2000+) and wonder if I can take a scanner with me to make sure the miles aren't BS.

I could not do it myself with my OBDII scanner Actron Scanner I'm using-click me and the dealer offered to do it for $55. An indy shop should be able to do it for a little less. I use my code reader to read and clear codes. Works fine on any OBII cars, including an 04 Jetta diesel.

As for the comment about wasting money on scanners: I charged people at work $10 to read their codes and made up my $125 in 2 weeks. I like being able to pull my codes quickly and not taking it 12 miles away to have them read. Some stores won't let you come by too often either, that's how I made money so quick charging people here.

If you have a laptop or a PDA, you can get a device called the ELMScan5. Which can hook up to a PDA (via serial connection or wireless) and PC via wireless, USB, or serial. This device coupled with many freeware software can be used to read trouble DTCs, read car sensor data, do a virtual dyno, etc. The Elmscan5 is also compatible with all OBDII cars including the brand new ones today that run on the CAN spec.

http://www.scantool.net/ <-Probably the best $115 I spent on my car.

I just bought the Elmscan5 for my Volvo and anxiously waiting for it in the mail... planning to use my Palm PDA and laptop to do diagnosis and live sensor readings.

I got the ScanGuage II online:

http://www.scangauge.com

It works great! Easy to use and also functions as a trip computer. I have a '98 S70. It comes with the only cable you need and easy to use instructions.

None of the stores near me (Autozone, PepBoys etc) will scan for free I don't know where those people live. They all charge at least $50 for a scan. The Scanguage was worth it for me, diagnosed my bad thermostat which I replaced myself - cost of Scanguage and thermostat was less than garage would have charged for the job, and took about an hour.
