Project Thread: 16g Evo 3

Hi,

The 16G evo 3 turbo is installed and running for the past 2 weeks. Everything went fine until last Friday when a big cloud of white smoke coming out of the exhaust. I thougt it was the head gasket but it was the turbo getting too much oil and a little of oil getting past the turbo ring.

I will be installing an oil restrictor in the oil inlet... as soon as I put back the head. Since I was sure it was the head gasket, I decided to remove it. I am doing the timing belt, water pump and a/c compressor at the same time. The head is in my garage, I removed all the valves today and started porting and polishing. This takes a lot of time but the ports are getting very smooth. Combusting chamber is smoothed exhaust will be polished tomorrow. The head rebuilt will have n/a cams and TB.

About the 16G, it's a TD05H-16G6. THe exhaust housing is from a DSM. I have an adapter bolted to a japan exhaust manifold and to the turbo. I had to re-clock both housings to get a good angle. I didn't have to shave the transmission mouth to fit the turbo and it's not close to the firewall. It's a little bigger than the stock turbo.

I'll try to take a few pics soon. I work 60 hours a week and I work on the car about 1 day/week.

Nice glad to hear you got it running! Thats interesting about the oil restrictor, ill give a call to Hahn Racecraft about my 16g and see if mine needs one.

Did your oil return line bolt on, or did you have to mod it a little like me?

What are you using for tuning?

And where did you get the Mitsubishi to T3 flange adaptor?

Hi,

About the oil return line, I had to cut it at 2 places. Shortened it at the same place as yours and lengthened i at the straight to make up from the spacer+longer exhaust housing. Welded to a flange under the turbo but kept a silicone joint in the straight to make up for little angle errors.

I still haven't tuned her. My wideband is not working, (never buy any used wideband sensors) and it's a L1H1 sensor so it's too expensive. I'm going to get a new like a AEM on eBay but I don't have the cash right now. I'm broke. Just paid for plates, insurances, 3" downpipe welded and 2.5" cat-back.

I will be tuning her with a Jaycar fuel controller and boost controller. I didn't install the wastegate actuator yet. Creeping to 2 psi lol.

I machined the T3 to DSM adapter. It's custom with a pocket under it to fit the Volvo exhaust manifold. I have a thread about it in the showroon.

Can't wait to try it at 15 psi.

I'd like to get 280whp with the auto at 15 psi with stock intercooler.
