Bump Stop Calculation

What is the correct way to determine required bump stop size and position?

If you need more info, I have a strut with 9" of travel and a 10" spring, std CO sizes.

I have purchased a set of foam and a set of poly stops and I'm not sure if these are going to be enough to get the job done. Rather not find out the hard way.

Thanks.

There are a few ways to go about it, it really depends on what you're trying to accomplish with the bumpstops......

If you're trying to prevent the strut/spring from traveling further than the control arm can, then simply figure out where the control arm binds and then go from there. I'd put the strut up in there with no spring and then compress it until you reach your binding point. Then take measurements of the stroke of the strut, then use bumpstops accordingly to prevent it from reaching that point.

If, for example, you're trying to use bumpstops to prevent the car from scraping or something when hitting bumps, then put a ziptie onto the strut its self firmly and push it to the bottom of the strut, and drive regularly for a while. When the strut compresses, it will move the ziptie and the ziptie will then stay where ever it is moved to, leaving you with a gauge of the maximum travel of the strut.

In many cases, more primitive sources are far more accurate than anything you can plug into a calculator.

Speaking from my own experiance, If you have a moderatly lowered car and drive aggresivly and or hit a lot of holes and bumps you will bottom out the shock with a 350# spring without any bump stops.

So you will need to put in which ever bump stop feels the best when it hits. Compaired to stock stops the polys are going to feel hard, however regaurdless of which stops you use hitting them hard is not good!
