Vms Motor / M56h / All Around Maintenance

I started working on my Vms motor to replace the valve seals and head gasket because i get a whole lot of smoke on start up

and at idle. My engine has about 15k miles on it since it was rebuilt. I have been running really rich. I just havn't had the cash

for tuning and i am paying for it now. Id like to get her running rite and hopefully with a little info from you guys and girls i can

do most of it myself.

Now that i have the head off i realize i should go ahead and pull the m56h out so that i can fix 3rd gear. I believe the

synchronizer is shot because it will not go into gear unless double clutch it.

The 35r was such a pain to remove.

When I had the BSR stage 3 ecu in the car it ran pretty well. i was getting close to 30 mpg. it still smelled rich and had a

slight rich back fire if i let off quick. I fried the ecu and got a stock one. Thats when all the smokeing started. Im the first one

to admit running it like that is stupid but i was confidant that i wasnt running it lean. Id say 10-15 mpg rich is about rite.

Doesnt look like any harm was done. Just needs alot of cleaning up.

You're probably the 7th person I've talked to with a damaged 3rd gear on their M56H. Try to source a junk one and fix yours, I talked to a couple of trans places locally and they didn't seem to bothered by the idea of rebuilding one.

You need to get a custom tuning done asap. There may be places that you are running rich but somewhere along the band i am betting you are running lean. And also, why have all those badars mods and not have it tuned properly? You are losing so much power.

Is the fueling there to run high boost? Like upgraded injectors and pump? Also, what year and type of car are you running this in? I notice you have ME4.3/4.4 so I guess OBD port tuning is out of the question, but RICA prolly has a map in stock for the GT35r. Tunes for the non-ME7 cars is only 675 right now... I think I'd jump on that stat.

Valves should be fine. When you have the seals replaced they will clean up the valves. You haven't been running cheap gas in there have you?

Not sure where you are coming up with the 30 mpg number. You can't run off the trip computer if you have changed the injectors becuase it runs a calculation on the injector cycle rate to figure out how much fuel is going in the engine. If you put bigger injectors on, the duty cycle is lower than the stock ones.

They don't sell spare parts for the transmissions. They replace the whole thing.

I know, I meant find a used one on CL or Ebay and make a good one out of two. That's what local places were trying to do. It comes out slightly cheaper than buying a decent used one, but not by much (which is why I bought a used one with a warranty when I couldn't use Eric's old one).
