Tom93R1
When I crank up the heat I get a good blast of coolant smell that goes away after a minute. A/C smells fine, only when the heat is on do I get it. Could I have a small leak in the heater core or one of the lines going to it? I dont have a wet floor or any other visible leaks inside or out. Is there a valve that opens and blocks water flow to the core? Maybe thats leaking while it opens and closes? thanks
ViperVette
I would say heater core. How many miles do you have? Could be a small crack or just that its new and hasn't gotten to seep into the carpet yet.
KlausC
It is easy enough to verify. Just remove the kick plate next to the gas pedal, and take the plastic cover off the heater core. A visual inspection is needed. Total replacement of the core is quite easy and there is a write up on Bay 13.
Tom93R1
Its a 96 with about 135k. Thanks for the hints, I didnt get a manual yet so I didnt know where the heater core was. I will look for the write up.
Tom93R1
Aww, S80 heater core as shown in Bay 13 is much easier to get at than the 850. I can see the lines and they arent leaking but it looks like to get any further into this will require more quite a bit more console removal. Oh well, maybe this weekend. thanks! erikv11
Sometimes it is just the firewall connection, the o-rings go bad and coolant leaks where the hoses connect to the coupler. In that case coolant will run back down the hose into the core compartment, or leak down the firewall into the cabin/carpet. Be sure to check thoroughly, it is frustrating to replace the heater core and then find out it was not the problem. I know.
Tom93R1
Are you talking about the aluminum lines? Or are there more lines? My aluminum lines that go in the bottom of the core are bone dry. Maybe I am not looking at the right area?thanks

Tom93R1
Well that sure was painless other than the being bent over at the dealer for a heater core. I would have ordered one online but I hate doing the job twice and waiting for parts... although I probably would have saved $200 Any way, I ended up with an extra part I found under the carpet. Anybody recognize it?http://volvospeed.com/vs_forum/index.php?showtopic=79883thanks for all the help. This forum kicks jerk!tom
