B737
I have a 2001 XC that has the fault message of "Tailgate open" all of the time even with it shut. The previous owner broke the glass and could not wait for the dealer to replace it so had a glass shop do it. The dealer said that the fault light appears due to the glass is not a Volvo/OEM part. It is a name brand window who's name escapes me right now. How exactly would the glass tie in to the door open system? Seems a little odd to me but you have to believe the dealer right?Any suggestions on where to start with this?Does anyone have access to the wiring diagram for the tailgate they could send me?Thanks,Jeremy
Chilled man
lol glass not volvo glass I would think when the glass was installed they disconnected a sensor in the trunk lid ? or the sensor telling you the trunk lid is closed went bad. Seriously how dumb does the dealer think some people are, what like volvos have some specials super glass in there cars that no one else has ?
flyfishing3
just had this fixed in my car two weeks ago.you'll need a whole new wiring harness.there's a ton of wires that run through the trunk hinge and one of the wires was getting pinched and now has broke clean through.i watched my mech do it. not a huge deal but you have to remove the whole trunk inards and at least on my car most of the stuff on the drivers side under the hinge.he said its pretty common for wagons that use the trunk often.the part was under 200 iirc. i'm sure my part number would be different than what you need though.mike

flyfishing3
maybe, but this dumb wire that was cut throw was so thin. also you could tell the whole harness was wearing at this bend spot. in a pinch i'm sure you could jerry rig it.

I thought it seemed like a bunch of BS too, but some times you never know what they will do to keep you as a customer (hostage!). I'll take the cover off this weekend and poke around. FYI the glass is by PPG.Jeremy
dmelviØØ7
It could need a new tailgate latch too.
B737
It could need a new tailgate latch too.dmelvi007- I read in another post your a tech. So what gives the signal to the "message" indicator that the hatch is open? I t/s it today and found the micro switch in the latch open all the time. Cleaned and cycled it now it works fine (the switch). Getting .03 ohms thru the plug when locked and open when not. Put it all back together and still getting the message. Is there another proximity sensor hidden in the frame that senses the hatch being closed or is it just through that switch? If it's thru the switch then I must have a open wire upstream of the connector. Thanks,Jeremy

I just brought up the latch because I have replaced a harness and not had the message go away. Be sure to eliminate all options before replacing a part, good job. B737
Well after spending a hour or so of tracing wires and jumpering I finally figured it out. It did turn out to be directly related to the glass after all!!! The glass has three connectors on it: Power in +12vdc, ground and another ground tap. I found no (as in broken off) tab attached to the glass for the ground. (This is why I never like to have some one else work on my cars. They broke it when installing it and rather than do the right thing for the customer and getting a new window $$$ they just covered it up!) So this winter I would have figured out that I also have no window heat. The other ground tap is the source for the ground signal to the computer through the micro switch in the latch, when closed. So no ground for the window= no ground for switch = fault message.I was able to make a spring contact for the ground to the glass as solder would not stick to the traces. Then I found that the trace for the ground tab to the switch was also open so had to add an extra wire across the hatch to the connector for the switch. IMO poor design to use a trace in the glass rather than a wire to cross the hatch.Put it all back together and no message and window heat!!Also learned that the entire hatch is fiberglass. Thanks for the help and info,Jeremy
