Gt R Performance Expectations

Turbo5

Recommended Posts

hey guys, so my moms lease is up and were looking for a new car. I'm really pushing for an 04 R, but the problem is its gonna have to be a GT cuz were both gonna be driving it. The only thing im worried about is that Ive read around that a GT R hits 0-60 in low 7s, is that true...and if so would a BSR PPC bring the GT back to mid 5s range???

04-05 GT had torque limiting in 1st and and 2nd gear which made the GT R just as fast in the first two gears as say a s60 T5. It wasn't until 06 that the torque limiter was removed. But with certain chips and standalones, the torque limiter can be removed but a waiver must be signed because the added power in 1st and 2nd can really damage the tranny. So buy newer, or get a manual.

5.7 is usually a 'projected' number. Based on HP and weight figures. 7.2 would be an actual measured time. However, I know my pops' 04 V70R will do the sprint in well under 7, probably low 6s.(Manual)

If you like the S60 lines and you are performance oriented you should take a look at the T5s

and what would you recommend year wise, and what options a numbers would we be talking about without taking apart the engine? (since thats what he is asking sorta)

IN that price range he should be able to get an 05. With bolt ons it should do a low 6 high 5 0-60 which will put it faster than the R with a lot more reliabality.

ya about the T5 i know, but i just love the whole R look and feeling...and i cant get a manual cuz my mom will be driving teh R as well, and i cant get newer cuz theres a budjet...

Wow....

So this comes down to sheet metal, then?

You'd rather take a (MUCH) less reliable R over a T5 with similar performance becasuse of the "look and feeling?"

So it's a status symbol?

Doesn't the fact that you're driving your moms car negate the value of it as a status symbol?

Do your mom a favor: Get the reliable performance car and leave your (what seems to me) adolescent irresponsibility out of it. At the very least, give your mom all the facts. It does seem like it'll be her car, after all. Tell her that if you get an R, you'll have to get new tires yearly, because there's no such thing as a max performance tire that gets more than 20K miles. Tell her that you're almost certain to have a lot more reliability issues, as does any ultra-high-performance car like the R.

Then let her make the call :)

Cheers!

The torque-limiting in 1st and 2nd gear applies to 2004-2005 S-60R's with the 5-speed automatic. Torque is limited to 250 lb-ft. in 1st and 2nd, versus 295 lb-ft. in the higher gears. So from a 0-60 perspective it is no better than a T5. The manuals don't have this restriction, and therefore show the true engine performance of the R engine in all gears.

IPD sells ECU's for these cars that retain the torque limiting, and also a version that eliminates it. The price is the same, but you need to sign a waiver form for the no-limiting version, indicating that you understand the potential risks to your tranny. That said, it is probably not much of a risk, unless you are also doing a lot of trailer towing, etc. Both ECUs are upping the torque and hp of the engine, above the stock R, but for the torque-limiting version the improvement is only applicable to 3rd-5th gears - no change in 1st and 2nd. If you get the no-limit version, then not only are you getting rid of the torque-limiting, you are also raising the engine's torque and hp, in all gears. I don't know of any ECU chip that simply eliminates the torque-limiting, without changing anything else (although you'd think there might be a market for it, if it was significantly cheaper than the regular, raised-performance ECU).

The torque-limiting was finally done away with (by Volvo) in 2006, I think by going to a 6-speed automatic that is apparently a bit more robust than the 5-speed.

I'd have to agree with some of the other posters that a T5 is probably a more appropriate choice for a car that your mother will be driving, and relying on, etc. - and is no slouch, either. You could always buy an R badge to add on (or to replace the T5 badge)... (Just kidding, although it is something that you can buy.)

You guys are right no doubt, but i did explain to my mom that its a high performance vehicle, although she does not know the extra $$ we will need regularly for maintenance and parts, i just find that the R is so much nicer and rarer. Also, all the Rs that i'm interested (under 22K) are the same price as 04 05 T5s, so its hard to chose a T5 over R. We'll see though...

What exactly will hit my bank account if i get an R rather than T5, aside tires?...
