Gt R Performance Expectations

Turbo5

Recommended Posts

You guys are right no doubt, but i did explain to my mom that its a high performance vehicle, although she does not know the extra $$ we will need regularly for maintenance and parts, i just find that the R is so much nicer and rarer. Also, all the Rs that i'm interested (under 22K) are the same price as 04 05 T5s, so its hard to chose a T5 over R. We'll see though...

What exactly will hit my bank account if i get an R rather than T5, aside tires?...

The entire drivetrain

Get a T5 and an R body kit.

The entire drivetrain

Exactly.

This is a ultra-high-performance car. It requires a significant amount of maintenance.

Check out the Edmonds "True Cost To Own" feature.

For the R it's $59k (79 cents per mile) http://www.edmunds.com/new/2007/volvo/s60/100770005/cto.html

For the T5 it's $53k (71 cents per mile) http://www.edmunds.com/new/2007/volvo/s60/100770156/cto.html

That makes an R 10% more expensive to own for nearly the same performance with different sheet metal. Just that simple. And I'd bet on that being a conservative estimate. Because if you drive the car like a normal young man drives a car, it's going to need a lot more maintanence than what Edmonds estimates.

I'm not trying to knock you. I'm 24. I bought a new 2001 Cadi Catera Sport when I was 19. I _destroyed_ that car. I threw on some Eagle F1s and drove it like I was on a fricken track every day. By the time I had it paid off (just last year) it was a POS compared to what it should've been.

And even with the upgrades in that car it was nothing, NOTHING like an s60R.

If you want to be responsible, and make a learned choice, buy the 2.5t. If you want to be just slightly irresponsible, buy the T5. If you want to be reckless, go for the R.

I understand and you guys are right, but if i get a T5 i will chip it nonetheless, ive driven a stock s70 t5 for almost 2 years now and i crave performance....

People have a tendency to over compensate. I've seen people go from a focus to an expedition. Try real hard to find a few ounces of maturity and consider if that's what you're doing.

And I hope your mother knows what you're planning on doing to her car.

I'll tell you what -- It's been my philosophy for the past few years that you're destined to destroy the first car you own. You're just not capable of making responsible decisions until you see what the consequences of those decisions are. That means biting the bullet for huge repair bills or having to pay a monthly payment for a once-beautiful car that now runs like a POS.

But to do that to somebody elses car... well... that's just bulshit.

Not giving your mother--who is paying the bills--the truth about what your plans are is immoral and UNSAFE. She needs to understand that the car will have more power than the engineers intended. She needs to understand the effects this will have on downstream systems of the car such as the suspension, braking, etc. She needs to understand that chip'ing a car is going to invalidate her warranty. She needs to understand that no matter how you slice it, it's going to reduce the reliability of a car.

For me, the notion of putting my own mother behind the wheel of a car that is MUCH more likely to break down, and has an amount of power that is unsafe for untrained drivers, is unthinkable. It should be for you, too.

I hope you come to your senses, for your sake and your mothers.

With the amount of responsibility you've demonstrated in this thread, I'd buy you a S40 NA. There is nothing in this thread to indicate that you're capable of responsibly handling a 300+hp car.

No, you didn't come here to be preached to. But if you don't want to hear it, stay off a public forum. In fact, that's good advice-- why don't you go sit down and talk with mom about this and get her opinion......

If you crave performance the S60R is not for you. Its gonna be slower that what you have now.

i agree with charles get the s60t5 w/ r bdy kit... i looked around for 3 weeks at s60 t5's and s60r's.... negotiating a price was a pita let alone finding anything in descent shape, the R is just not worth it, the awd drive train is horrible, it can only take just about what the car makes power wise from the factory. and there is no real benefit with the R over the regular s60 other then suspension.

its far cheaper to maintain a s60, really i would try and get the s60t5 awd and but the r body kit and roll around like that, chip it and you basically have an r

or buy an 850

I love my R. The brakes, AWD, suspension, transmission, seats, colors, etc... all worth it to me. Especially not having to deal with torque-steer. I haven't had any issues other than the common ones noted and all have been replaced/repaired under warranty. Having a competent local dealer service department can also make a huge difference. It's not trouble-free, but I don't believe any modern car will be. Even my uncle's Lexus has had two brand new heads put on it. That's why you get a warranty.

But I don't think the 5-speed auto R is worth it either. I tried to talk my brother out of getting his. They torque-limited the 5-speed for a reason, though, a Swedespeeder put 90k+ miles on his 04 GT w/ the IPD Stage 2 and torque-limiter removed.

I would drive both the R and the T5 back-to-back, with your mom, and decide then. The R-features may not be worth it to you/her either.

I don't think the reliability is much of a factor between the 2, but I dont own a S60 and Im AWD biased for now ~

Is the bodykit from the dealer got some big oval tip coming out of the left/drivers side exit ? Saw a S60R yesterday and it looked ok but funky, the bumper had a special cut out for it, it was pretty slick but sorta WTF at the same time.
