Things To Look For When Buying Cams

Recommended Posts

I'm thinking of getting some N/A Cams, either locally, or from someone on VS...

Are there any things I should look or watch out for?

Also can I get the cams polished, etc...

Any suggestions are welcomed...

thanks guys...

Damn...I thought a good amount of ppl did this mod...

question is simple:

Is there anything I need to know about the N/A Cams or what to look out for when buying them...

Cams are a compromise. You can move the power band around a bit with different cams. NA cams may give more power at higher revs but a corresponding loss at lower revs.

As for polishing cams, I am not sure what you are asking. Cams are not like manifolds or connecting rods nor are they like valve covers and tailpipes or even crankshaft counterbalances. There is no point, cosmetic or otherwise.

Cool...the only reason I asked was b/c I've seen some anodized and polished ones for honda, mitsubishi, even supras...

(not that cosmetics really plays an important role when it comes to cams...

Do you know exact who does Cams for Volvo's in the states?

Trying to talk to LR engineering, guys who did Raf's cams...but PITA to get in contact with lol. Otherwise, anyone have any idea where I can get blanks/cores of our cam for Crane to grind?

Because for the handful of people that need them they are better off welding their own. And unless you want a 2000RPM idle the stock ones are fine. RE: polishing them I have seen it down for less drag o them. But again, most people do not even have proper A/F so worrying about polished cams is kinda silly.

Show me someone who has welded up their cams for a grind here? I considered it and Crower absolutely refused to do the grind.

Hi,

I just installed a pair of n/a cams in my engine. I bought them used for 50$ and paid 20$ at a local engine builder to get them cleaned and polished. You have to look for damaged spots or scratches.

I timed them at 0 0 for now. the engine was started 2 days ago and I didn't have time to play with timing.

I added duration to mine and lowered the lift slightly

You welded them up and grinded them yourself? Aren't they cast iron? Seen snapped cams and cast steel doesn't snap. Dunno about Volvo specifically though.
