Head Gasket

This morning when I got to work, my car started to overheat (it never reached the red zone) and I'm assuming it's my HG. I did have a milk shake substance in the coolant resovoir and I'm going to assume it's a head gasket. I'm going to have it towed today to the dealer to see what they think.

Question for you guys...

I don't feel like pouring in 2-4k if it's a HG. If I was to sell the car as-is, how much do you think I'd be able to get for it...

It's a 98 C70 T5 auto w/ 78k miles on it. The exterior is in mint condition aside from the bumpers which have some nicks here and there. There is only one tiny tiny door ding. The interior is perfect as well.

I'm thinking maybe between 2-3k?maybe more?

The milkshake--what color? Pink, then transmission cooler within the radiator. Oil cooler for engine could also do this, so don't blame the head gasket right away. You can also pull the plugs and look at them. If there is a coolant leak in the head generally you will see the leaking cylinder much cleaner than the others.

Well we'll see what the dealer says first. But the coolant was chocolate milkshake color in the resovoir but it wasn't all like that.

I think it's leaking from a line that leads to near the turbo...I tried pouring some coolant in and it started leaking right near the turbo underneath the heat shield...

I'm worried about the HG because of the milkshake color and the fact it got hot and was steaming a lot. The needle never went into the red but still it was steaming a lot.

I'll keep you posted with what happens...it should be at the dealership soon.

So the dealer wants to replace all of my coolant hoses (anything related to coolant) since they all look pretty crappy beside the T-stat one....

One of the hoses did pop off...they want 800-1000 in labor LOL and 470 for parts.

Price doesn't seem too bad. Of course you could do it, but it does take a bunch of time. Better than buying another car.

Seems kind of high to me if we're "just" talking cooling system hoses.

Maybe ask them if they have some room to play with the parts prices if you decide to have them do it. Dealers have room to play on parts prices, sometimes alot. They have specified "lowest" prices they can sell parts for in their computers.

If this includes the T-Stat, Coolant Temp Sensor, Coolant Reservior and flushing all the fluid, changing the oil and trans fluid due to the overheating where it sounds like they are really doing a full cooling system service, the price for labor would them be more justified. Otherwise for just the hoses, I think they want way too much for labor.

Remove the heat shield and fill up the coolant system. Pressurize the system with a pump and see where the water is leaking from.

Replace that hose. (two heater hoses and a short length of coolant hose are back there)

For the milkshake in the coolant bottle, remove the lower oil cooler line from the radiator and pressurize system again, if you see a trickle of coolant coming out, you've found the problem. Repeat with trans. cooler if you don't get anything.

If you have milkshake on your dipstick, you have possible headgasket problems. Milkshake in the coolant bottle is more likely a ruptured radiator cooler.

Use cascade and water to clean out the system. The oil in the coolant hoses will soften them all to jelly and all will be popping before long. Best to fix the leak as soon as possible.

I think you can get all of the coolant hoses for about $225 from FCP, radiator is about $200. I had to replace all of these items recently for the same situation you are having.

Thanks for some good info here. I'll definitely be trying to replace all the hoses myself but I think you are right about the oil in the coolant hoses softening them, this problem should be fixed and I had a feeling it was the radiator based on some things I've read here. There is no milkshake substance on the oil stick, I know that for sure.

I'll look into purchasing the hoses from FCP soon, maybe the radiator too. Any bad things about the radiator from FCP? I think I've heard mixed results...

Also, would anyone happen to have some VIDAS pictures of the coolant lines, I'm just curious where all of them are. I know where the big one's are but I'm sure there are some little ones that hide.

Thanks,

Jay
