Replace S70t5 Tranny Front Pump Seal

Recommended Posts

I have a 98 S70T5 with ~205K on the clock. Apparently, my front pump tranny seal needs to be replaced as there is a significant leakage of tranny fluid. I put on 1.1K miles this week on vacation and lost ~ 3 quarts of fluid. That fluid is now dripping on my garage floor and the underside the car, fouling my trunk and any cars following directly behind me for any length of time. Yukk.

Anyway, a tranny shop said my "front seal" was leaking and would fix it for ~$750. Ouch. all labor of course as they said the tranny needs to be pulled (out the top!).

So, if I replace this seal myself, does the tranny need to come out of the car? I don't see any specifics here in this forum that might describe the procedure to replace this seal.

Help.

Thanks.

Jim B.

Short answer. YES.

The transmission must come out of the car to replace the front seal. No way around it.

If I'm not mistaken, the transmission comes out under the car. You have to drop the subframe, according to VADIS.

If there is an easier way, I wish I'd known, I removed and replaced my transmission on my 99V70 from the bottom.

BTW, I replaced all the outside seals before I installed the replacement transmission.

Sigh, that's what I thought.

I don't suppose anyone has used any of the tranny sealer additives with any luck? Any particular brand that appears effective with our tranny's?

Thanks again.

P.S. If I have the front seal replaced, I assume I should just tell them to replace ALL tranny seals in addition to the RMS. Anything else whilst the tranny is out?

Yep, while they are in there definetly get the rear main replaced. Just have to remove the flywheel once the transmission is out. I pulled my engine and transmission together out of the top and did the rear main, front pump seal, and both halfshaft seals. If just taking the transmission out it does come out from the bottom.

Never tried a transmission leak sealer myself but have never heard a good result from people that tried them. They usually end up having whatever seal was leaking replaced.

Good luck with it,

Rob
