Anti-freeze

So I just spent almost $800 on a brand new OEM radiator, thermostat, thermostat housing, new coolant lines and labor on my car. A little bitter but it had to be done. So my question they put it all back together and the over flow reservoir is filled with clear liquid... I called and asked he said its new coolant that mixes with anything and it is clear not dyed like the green coolant I am used to. .... So my question is do they even sell that stuff and if so is it just as good or better?

Who did the work for you ? A rad shop, the dealer or an indy shop ? What's in the coolant, make sure it's compatible with what you should be running in your engine. Get a name of a product, a clear liquid could be water for all you know.

How's the car running ? Warm, normal ? I'd pick the shop's brain first and do some research.

he said its a new coolant that works great with volvo's former dealer mechanic turned volvo shop owner... always had great luck in past with his advice and he is Mod friendly so its a great shop.. Just wondering if you all heard about this clear stuff.. I might do a coolant dump.

Oh the car runs great perfect temp better than before.

Why would you want to dump the coolant if it's working fine and you trust the guy ? Get a name, I'm interested in this stuff. I'm no coolant expert, but I've never heard of a colorless coolant.

my question is what is idel temp for our engines?

right now the gauge on my cluster is a little past the middle (it has been around 100 degrees here in Washington DC)

so a little above middle is fine or bad?

my coolant level is between MIN and MAX

Yes, as long it does not get too close to the red, the gauge could be a little off, or your sensor could be showing its age. I had mine above the middle for a while until I finally pushed the needle down one day (removed cluster). I had tested the temperature of the coolant and it was adequate, so I knew the gauge was taking a dump.

I wan to say that our coolants are supposed to run at 90 degrees celsuis, but I may be slightly off.

Dead center is where the gauge is supposed to read when its alittle hotter then normal alittle above is not big deal and a little below when its cold its fine anything more the a bar either way and your having some sort of problem either the thermostate is kicking the bucket , wich 99% of the time is the problem and putting in a new solves that problem or that 1% is where the problem is not a easy or a cheap fix .

so if its off more then 1 bar either way spend the $25 for a new stat and new bolts replace it add in premixed coolant fluid and go :)

for a thermostat... what degree cel does it need to be for our P1 S70s?

I have only found 87c, 90c, 92c

I believe that you are supposed to run a 90 C on your car. Mine was an 87, but it changed after that. Someone else should confirm.

I thought it was 87C Non-Turbo and 89C Turbo. If your just above center, maybe you put in the wrong *C t-stat? Or could just be the heat.

I would dump it and go with Volvo Coolant. It isn't that much more expensive and coolant is something you def. don't want to screw with.

I was reading BAY 13 about how to change the theromostat...

do I have to dump all the coolant out?

or can I just let the car sit over night and then go at it with 40 TORX with no need to drain the coolant?

Well you need to get the coolant level below the T-stat. You'll have to dump a fair ammount and it's a lot easier to get rid of it all then do just a portion. If it was my car I would dump it, flush it, and give it all new fluid.

Just a reminder folks, use distilled water, not tap.

coolant is green or orange

clear = water

no!

the color of coolant depends only on what color they put into it. It all starts out clear. It used to be that certain chemistries were a certain color, that was the reason for the coloring. But that is not followed any more.

If you really think it might be water, put your fingertip in the reservoir (when it is cool!) and taste it. If it is coolant it will be sickly sweet.

I use Zerex G-05 coolant. It is clear. It works great.

You can clamp off the upper rad. hose that goes into the T-stat. Its a way to simplify the process and also save some coolant. Your gonna have some spillage though, so have some gloves and something to clean it up with. Should just be able to wipe it down w/ a damp rag tho.
