Tuning Air/fuel Ratios With The 16g

Hi,

I made my first wot run with the 16G6 at 14 and 16 psi with the large MAF and 46lb injectors. During the run, it was always around 10.4. I've spoke with local tuners and one of them told me it was rich and safe but the other tuner told me it was way too rich and would wash my cylinders very fast.

I plan to adjust the fuel a little with the air fuel controller but I would like to know with these engines with stock rods, what ratio should I tune for medium throttle low boost and high boost and wot?

Is 10 psi under 4000 rpm too much?

So far, the 16G6 with the 7cm^2 housing spools almost as fast as the stock turbo, but I've never felt my head move that hard into the headrest.

I run 18 psi on my Super16g, even with water injection, I keep it around 11.6 to 11.8, although I must say that when I had it at 12.5, I felt a significant power gain, but didnt want to risk anything running that afr in the 100 degree weather down here.

Thanks for the information.

This is on the stock ECU with just bigger injectors and MAF housing.

I will borrow an SAFC from my friend and try to make some changes. Would it be safe to run 18 psi with stock timing? Weather here is very cool averaging 15°C.

Im not sure how different your turbo is than mine, but on mine, I ran 18 psi on stock timing for awhile, but I then retarted the timing, 5 extra degrees by 18psi, and noticed a large gain in power.

you pulled timing and gained power?

Is this with or without water injection?

I have the knocksense installed and the light is blinking some times so I am wondering if it is normal? Sometimes around ~3500 rpm and a little above 5k.

I will install a safc and egt gauge this week end and see what I can do.

Thanks,

Pierre

Yes, if when using the stock timing maps, there was knock and the stock ecu was retarding timing even further to almost a "safe" mode, this kills power. By retarding timing in proper amounts, (I did one degree for every additional pound of boost above 12 psi), this prevents the knock, and thus the ecu from freaking out and pulling large amounts of timing.

This is with water injection. The knock light that I have, will blink only whenever the knock sensors pick up a vibration, this dosent necessarily mean its knock from detonation, sometimes its exhaust sound, heat shield rattle etc...The ecu does pay attention to even these brief moments of knock, although it wont pull timing or add fuel unless it notices a pattern of repeated knock.

have you dynoed that car yet ? i'm interested in those numbers

I dyned it before I realised the problem with the timing, the car was shooting black smoke out of the turbo/downpipe joint from running so rich, wasn't a fun time, numbers are not worth sharing lol.
