Dashboard Is Driving Me Insane!

How do you go about the dash that cracked in the middle close to windshield? I have that on both of my cars and I guess that is due to parking in the sun all of their lives (by previous owners). The cracks make additional noises but music keeps it somewhat forgotten.

You can count on that little noise getting much worse. Mine was a little squeaky every now and then. Now it is so bad, you cannot drive the car without ear plugs. No kidding!

After doing lots of reading, it looks like the above reinforcement is the "permanent" answer. Especially if you like your car and plan to keep it.

I know my previous suggestion will suck up 3 whole minutes of your life, but you should try it. I have done dash surgery - the whole nine yards. If you are going in have some sticky backed felt, self adhesive velcro, silicone spray etc.

I appreciate your info. Seriously!! I'm not touching this thing till it cools off. It is hotter than 40 hells down here right now. I will probably schedule surgery for November 3rd. Probably won't be an out patient deal. I'm sure it will be a slow recovery. As long it is not in the ICU for more than 2 days I will not lose my patience.

I'm thinking about shoving something behind there to get me by. Just trying to think of what to use?? It needs to be shoved down the passengers side up by the windshield. I can pull the dash back about 1.5 inches from the windshield up there. The drivers side is still attached.

Any other ideas appreciated as well.

before you perform surgery you can relieve the symptoms by forcing some sponge between that crack. if properly fitted it will give your ears a rest

I did a writeup a while back but no one wants to pin it! CLICK IT!

Yep, nice write up, really clear. Its interesting as the last couple of 850's I have looked at both had dash problems in the first 2 years of life. The dealers had repaired them with black sticky tape with soft foam on the back. Neither cars squeeked but it was interesting to see how Volvo had tackled the issue.

If you shove things in there, you risk breaking off the other side's tabs. I just suggest dealing with it or maybe at least go in and tighten the 4 bolts on the firewall and see if that helps any. That will take a whole 10 minutes.

How tight should they be? I assume that over tightening will break off the tabs too?

If there are 4 tabs, I'm assuming that the 2 on the passenger side are broken off. Does this sound right? Or does the one on the outside break off leaving the rest to hold it? I can pull the entire dash back about 1 inch from the windshield on the passenger side.

I guess there is no way that these things just came loose?

Anything is possible I guess, but it's highly doubtful. The nuts would have to fall all the way off to give you that much play. More likely that someone tried to tighten them at some point before you and over-tightened them and fractured the mounting tabs. Now they have totally stuff the bed. Either that or just old age + rough roads or some catastrophic circumstance. Mine broke when I got ALL GLORY TO THE HYPNOTOAD-ended.

And no....Grant wasn't there. :)
