So I accomplished all of my maintenance goals this summer except one: PCV.

I go back to school next weekend, so its probably not going to happen, so I have two questions:

1) Is this feasible for me to do in my school parking lot? I'm not super experienced with this, but I've done my own brakes, swaybars, and O2 sensor.

2) What would the dealer charge to get this done?

yes you can do it in the school parking lot on a flat surface...

last time I called they wanted $1000 to do a PCV which is removing of the intake manifold

you can do this in one day... easy if you read a lot about it first search PCV* on the forum and you will find what you need.

I wouldnt do this in the parking lot. I had to do it in 2 days because I needed different tools and parts. Nothing ever goes how you want it when working on your car and you need to prepare for this. Unless you make sure you have everything you need and extra tools and towels and time and also a friend that can drive you somewhere in case you need to buy something then I wouldnt do it.

Where do you go to school? Maybe someone in the area can help you...

I'm way up in Potsdam, NY so unless someone from Canada wanted to make the drive, I'd be on my own.

The dealer really charges $1000? Thats ridiculous. I might end up giving this a try on my own as I really need to get it done. I did the put paper over the oil filler to check for suction, and not only was there no suction, but the paper got oil all over it.

$400 is more like what I was expecting to pay, rather than $1000.

I'll call the dealer and my indy tomorrow, although I'm pretty pissed at my indy mechanic. I might just end up giving it a try in the parking lot.

Edit: Also, say I did want to use a catch can, why is it "off road use only"? Is it an emissions problem, or..?

What mileage? I have a 98 V70 NA w/ 112k, and been pondering about doing the PCV job - this car being a keeper.

I do reg maintenance of the flame trap.

Clarkson?

My local indie wanted 400 for the job. I did it myself and it wasn't even close to clogged.

The PCV is a pretty easy job. It helps to have practice working in the cramped engine compartment. Once you know your way around it, everything strips off really quickly. Please note: EGR cars are more of a pain.

Be mindful, the PCV job will force you to destroy the quick-clamps Volvo uses. You should have some (preferably) closed type hose clamps. I replaced the PCV hard line with a length of heater hose. $5 vs. $115 for the Volvo stuff. Works just as well after 60k.

Agreed, the 2 12mm bolts under the manifold are a bit of a pain, I've got large hands and a small ratchet will get under there and get them off without going under the car.

No I don't I looked at them before going to RPI. They wanted to give me a lot of money too. I think the catch can does violate some evaporative emissions requirement.

216K, I don't know if it had been serviced before. I know it hadn't been serviced since 180K when I got the car. The flame trap was clogged when I got it though.

I'm in the process of getting ready to do my PCV. Will probably just go ahead and replace with FCP's kit, or its equivalent. So I want to make sure I have everything I need on hand. So:

What are "closed type hose clamps"?

Are there some clamps to avoid using that will tear up or ruin the hoses/lines?
