2004.5 S40 Aftermarket Sound System

Hello,

I have a 2004.5 S40 and I am wondering if I can put a aftermarket sound system in it, (Subs, Amp). I have two 12'' Sony Explodes and a Pheonix Gold 1200 watt amp. I took it to best buy and they said that they cannot do it because the radio is digital and amps will not work because they aren't digital  . Is this true? Is there anything I can do?

Thanks!

People like that make me embarrassed to work for best buy. You can always add on subs with a line output converter or if the amp takes high level input. The deck is weird and I don't think you can replace it.

I was going to get the line output converter but he said it doesn't convert the digital into analog. I know I can't replace the stock stereo but can I still install my subs?

At the end of the day, every sound system out three has to have an analog component. Speakers are analog devices, because sound itself is analog. You can hook a line-level converter to ANY speaker in ANY car and get some sort of a usable signal.

Now, there are other reasons to avoid a line-level converter if you can - if there are any crossovers in your car to block bass or treble, these effects will be present as well - and the fact that line-level converters produce lower quality signals. But, they will get the job done if that's all you can easily run.

Did the newer volvo's finally get away from having the analog DIN6 plug for line out ?

If you can find a way to remove your head unit, check the back for THIS plug. If you can find this plug, you can buy an adapter to give you regular amp connections (with much better sound quality than a line-level converter) for about $25. If you can't remove the head unit, or you don't have that plug, then, you must go with a converter.

Either way, everything else is standard - and installing subs is definitely possible. They just put the amps in, get them hot and ground, and either connect a line-level converter, or connect to that DIN6 amp adapter.

Would the JL Audio Clean Sweep work? Or can I get away with something cheaper. If you could.. please post a link to what I need. Thank you so much!
