john1545
I've got some extra cash kicking around, and I want to throw it into my car but, I'm not sure what to do first. I'd like to either upgrade the exhaust, or tune the ECU. I'm not sure which one would be the best to do first, or the best bang for my buck. I did some searching and reading but, I'm still curious. What does anyone else think? It's for a 2004 S60 2.5T

If it was mine I would do the exhaust first then the ecu as there are different tunes for stock or aftermarket exhaust.Gary
t5jim
As Far as "bang for the buck" goes, significant increases in performance, and I do mean SIGNIFICANT,will be had by doing your ECU first.I have a 98 s70 t5m,I had george at VIVA PERFORMANCE map my ecu and the difference is immense! The car is in the shop now getting a carbon kevlar clutch so I can use all that power without the clutch melting....I bought the clutch from VIVA and also a 3" down-pipe,which we be installed Monday with a full 3" mandrel bent system and magna flow muffler.I dont know how many bucks you have to bang, but the ECU was 675 and the exhaust, including down pipe will end up at about 15-1600,way cheaper to do the tune first and have it re-flashed IF NECESSARY at a later date.Call George at VIVA,he'll steer you in the right direction and I feel he's very fair and knows his shizzit
Yellow95
My exhaust including DP was $525 mandrel bent. Why waste money on a reburn later when you can do it once and do it right?Gary
john1545
I was looking at the IPD website, and they say that if you do the ECU before the exhaust, you can overheat the turbo and damage the engine? Anyone know if that's true?
Alboguy
not if you drive the car the way it is supposed to be driven. if you go wot all the time. you may damage the engine and turbo+ other things. if i was you i would make sure the car is in top codition. do a costum 3ich full exhaust. and then do the chip. you gain gain about 20 hp of the exhaust + downpipe and another 25 of the chip and you will be god to go
B00STWAG1N
do exhaust first. doing an aftermarket ecu with stock exhaust wont let the ecu perform to its fullest since most ecu's are tuned for aftermarket exhaust. before oreo put on his 3inch downpipe his 17psi ecu made only 15psi with an mbc helping it. after exhaust he created 20psi and had to turn it down. do exhaust before chip.do exhaust first. doing an aftermarket ecu with stock exhaust wont let the ecu perform to its fullest since most ecu's are tuned for aftermarket exhaust. before oreo put on his 3inch downpipe his 17psi ecu made only 15psi with an mbc helping it. after exhaust he created 20psi and had to turn it down. do exhaust before chip. john1545
Hmmm I think I'm going to do the exhaust first, I've already put alot of $ into the car with some other non performance items, so I'll do the ECU tune next year. Thanks for your input everyone, I'm new to working on cars so I appreciate the advice.

How could you go wrong
