C70 Premium Sound

Hey,

I recently purchased a 01 C70 and can't figure out if I have the premium sound or the base sound system. I'm also unsure as to whether only the Premium was offered in American and nothing else.

My second question is just a basic review from fellow C70 owners, how is the audio quality with the Dynaudio speakers? I keep hearing huge amounts of praise for the factory sound system but won't be able to hear it for another few weeks when i get the car. I'm just so anxious.

Thanks!

The speakers are all the same. The only difference is the center speaker on the dash and the 2 subwoofers behind the rear seats.

The Premium Sound System had the big amp (4x100W) and came with the SC901 and the center speaker. There also was a smaller amp (4x60W) or none. The subwoofers always had to be ordered seperately.

The sound is really good! ;)

The 4x100 watt amp in those cars is a beast, I have one in my S70. Ever take a look at it?

Who's the beast, the dog or the amp? ;)

Offtopic, but how old is she (I guess)? Getting some gray hair like the dog my parents have.

I've got 2 Labradors that wouldn't leave the amp alone like your dog!

The Volvo amps are rebranded Alpine amps but that doesn't mean that they'd be bad! As far as I remember the 4x100W amp is called MRV-F450 or something like that...

The head unit in you C70 is probably an SC-900/901,

also made for Volvo by Alpine. I sure like my system!

I have the SC-901 and the little 4 x 50 amp with "basic"

premium sound speakers. Learn more about what Alpine

and Volvo have cooked up for these cars here:

This here arcticle will help with that pesky book learnin' and such...

Haha, he's a male. Not sure how old, but middle aged, at least. He can still out-run me, though.

Damn! Got to finally check out the car and no center speaker! Looked at the Head-unit and it was a SC-816, checked out the speakers and they were Dynaudio's though. From what I've read the base sound system with the SC-816 blows so I'm pretty disappointed. Didn't bother to look for the amp which I'm assuming is the 4x60 but it's probably there.

Now if the audio quality sucks when I get a chance to listen what would be my best route for better audio? (Considering the stock HU already has issues playing burned discs) Buying a new HU? Finding the 4x100 amp?

Should you decide you need the 4x100 amp, let me know.

BTW: the SC-816 has no issues playing burned CDs. That would be a characteristic of the 900/901 -- and even these will play certain brands of recordable CD.

The SC-816 has a built-in equalization curve that gives a 20db boost at 60hz (probably to compensate for a lack of rear parcel shelf speakers in the V70), whereas the SC-901 has has a customizable 5-band equalizer built into it, as well as defeatable pre-set equalization curves for different Volvo vehicles. Also, the lack of internal amplification in the SC-901 might provide cleaner sound, but I haven't noticed such benefit from experience with both head units.
