Pcv

My guess is that you will be charged for at least three hours, maybe four. If we are talking about Volvo indie, and he has done it before, it would take him no more than two hours to do it, even an hour although that's a stretch.

Even a DIY or shade tree Volvo mech can do it under two hours, if he has done it before and has the tools. What make the job longer is that, if you own the car, you would take the opportunity to clean places that otherwise would not be accessible when the intake manifold is out. I know I did :)

Whereabout are you from, I'll do it for three hours including the 'cleaning' :) so I can use the money for some upgrade to my 'project' car.

How much shoudl a mechanic charge to change the PCV if I give him the parts and he cahrges around $60 an hour?

THanks

Like any job thats more than a wiper change etc, I plan it for the coming Sat or Sun, tackle it early in the AM and set aside the whole day for a task. Most jobs that seem "easy and quick" can be the ones that turn into week long tasks due to complications. If you plan on the whole day, you can take your time so its done right (as opposed to rushing it because you need to do other things later in the day, and you break things trying to rush), and you're not all bent out of shape if a one hour job turns into 3-10hours instead.

How many times have you started a simple job that turned into a disgrace?

I've been in the middle of small jobs and had a small nut about the size of a pencil eraser fall into an intake and drop down into the engine. The simple task went from a 30min job to 2 days because I needed to take the engine apart to retrieve the nut or I would've probably ruined the engine. Or a simple oil change, and a rusty plug gets rounded off, or an aged bleeder valve on a caliper snaps off and you can't finish the job until you replace the part (and they're not open till Monday etc.)...you're always better off planning longer than you think, and it'll be a lot less frustration.

I have a big writeup with photos on the way regarding the ABS module in my 96 850 BTW that is a perfect example

I have to pass, too far from central CT... But like I said, see if you can find a Volvo Indie shop that will agree to bill you for two hours, they don't usually dilly-dally and clean things up anyway. But ask specifically to clean the TB and clear the EGR hole if you have EGR, so don't forget to include in your order TB gasket as well as EGR gasket. Also ask that the PTC be cleaned and cleared of any clogs, as well as the metal tubing on top of the engine if your model has one. I just bypassed said metal tubing because it was totally clogged on my 94 Turbo.

Goodluck man.
