AnthonyR
Alright, like the title says, I'm starting a year long search/research for my next car. It's a car I will probably end up keeping for 5-10 years, so... After getting the E39 I realize how much better it is than my S40, although being a 525i it's a bit slow/basic for me, but perfect for the wife. Some basic requirements...1: This will be my DD2: It has to be winterable, but I'd drive pretty much any car in the winter, convertible/rwd/etc are fine3: must get 20+ mpg on the highway4: Must be fast (sub 6 to 60 and 13's or better 1/4)5: Convertible, sedan or coupe6: Must have rear seat (even if it's unusably small)7: Manual or Automatic8: Under $30k (preferably closer to 20k)9: Must handle and ride well (smooth and relatively quiet on the highway)10: Leather, power, the normal stuffSome cars I had in mindSedans:1: 01+ E39 M5 -Pros: fast, fast and fast -cons: guzzles gas like an oil shiek - mid-upper $20k's2: C32/C55AMG -Pros: fast and rides well -cons: questionable maintenance costs - mid-upper $20k'sCoupes/Convertibles1: E46 M3 -Pros: fast, good looks/handling, convertible. Cons:relatively expensive -mid-upper $20k's2: Porsche Boxter S -Pros: good blend of handling/ride/performance Cons-Chick car-ish, mid $20k's3: Early Porsche 996 -Pros: its a 911, enough said -Cons: can't think of any off hand. upper $20k's4: C5 Z06 -Pros: good performance for the money Cons: poor fuel, american - mid-upper $20k'sWould also consider keeping the S40 as a DD and getting an older (like 70's/80's) project car.Your input is obviously greatly appreciated. Serge
It's hard to say. The Boxster and 996 are probably the best handling cars in that list. THe C32/C55 AMG and E39 M5s are the only four doors, which is a plus, and the E46 M3 is also hawt.I'd be comparing the E39, E46 and the W203 Mercs. TM850R
I would go with the M3 or 996 personally. An M5 does sound pretty nice though if you can afford the fuel costs.
Finish
You've compiled a nice list of cars.I would go with the M3 aswell.

ViperVette
Gotta say it, if you want something winterable. STI.I do like the E39 M5 idea tho. I'd feel bad driving it in snow tho.
AnthonyR
STi isn't a bad option at all, but it's not as refined as I'd like
Karlson
M5 would be a good choice. I see them around a lot lately. probably the price went down a lot.
Serge
M5 would be a good choice. I see them around a lot lately. probably the price went down a lot.Haha true. There are two Russian kids that are like 21ish that seem to be driving E39 M5s around now. Usually one of them is always packed full of other Russians in leather jackets with all the windows down. They always mug at anyone they see. Pretty funny actually. If I had an E60 M5 I wouldn't mug anyone, lol, I would just use those 550hp.

AnthonyR
I'm not a fan AT ALL of the new Dodge/chryslers. The only one that appeals to me is the new challenger, but that's about it.
J0E
Forget about the M3 or Boxter/911 unless your wrists are limp. I laugh at every single 18-24 year-old I see driving either one of those thinking they are actaully cool cars. I wouldn't be caught dead in them. However, if I missed something and somewhere you mentioned it being a car for your wife/girlfriend...they make great daily-drivers for wannabe rich-bitches. Z06 or E39 M5 are the only cars worth thinking about on that list. Nothing touches the Z06 in terms of performance and fuel-economy, whereas the M5 is an awesome car if you need two extra doors.
