Magnetic Drain Plug Worth It?

I recently bought a mag. drain plug. Store will remain nameless for now. I buy stuff from there all the time. I had a problem with shipping on the last purchase. The package was not "packed" properly and some of the stuff came broken including 5 spark plugs in about 20 pieces. New parts were shipped after a quick e-mail and new parts were recieved in good condition.

Now I'm finding that the mag. drain plug is having serious issues? There is a chrome coating covering the magnet. The chrome is peeling off and has gotten in the oil. Should I peel all the rest of the chrome off and put it back in? Maybe it will pull some of this shat out?

I planned to keep this car a Long time. So, needless to say... This has really steamed my clams. Does anyone think an oil analysis would be worth it on a car this old?

Stupid me.... Needless to say.... I have put the factory plug back in there.

Live and learn.

Oil analysis is always helpful. As for the coating its usually nickel or some times chrome. Its is on there to protect the the ceramics in the magnet from oil.

the chrome on the magetic plug is peeling and has gotten into your engine?!??!!? hmmmm.......hopefully nothing happens to your engine......or maybe that cheapo magetic company should buy you another engine

Too small to inflict damage. It took a screw to seize an engine on one of my VW's....

Why were you using a magnetic plug to begin with ? Are you worried about the condition of your engine ?

I've heard this issue before, just when I got mine from fcp groton. The 94 850 Turbo Wagon I just acquired also has one. Luckyly, neither one has issue with peeling of the magnet coat. Using 10W30 synthetic all this time, I only get very little shaving on the magnet of my 98 V70 NA with 110k+, I don't know yet about the 94 850 which has 162k+. I got one already so I will continue to use it, but I can say now that it's probably not worth it if one is changing the oil regularly.

Oil filter is more than up to catching chrome flakes.

Absolutely...

Too bad the Mobil 1 oil filter is after the fact. Right?

The way I picture the oil pan is like this... Oil and lots of metal parts moving around vigorously. What ever is in the pan is going to be in contact with the bottom end.

What are the chances of these pieces of shat coming off in the bottom and screwing something up?

Should I be worried or should I just forget about it and move on. The car is great besides the rattle trap dashboard. I have planned to keep for a long time. Easy to work on, maintain, etc... Volvo's are awesome!

I have had plenty of big diesel trucks that had magnetic plugs. Never had this problem? Karma? I don't know....

I think you're fine. I just dropped the pan on my project 94 Turbo wagon with 162k and you wouldn't believe the crap that collects in there. 850 pan is a maze and not as simple as some other pan I dropped before which is just plane metal and easy to clean. Come to think of it, I now realize it's absolutely futile to drain the oil overnight with the amount of oil that gets trapped & left in there after draining it. The trick I now believe is to change the oil more frequently if you want to keep the oil as clean as possible.

But then again, my V70 NA, I would think is a lot cleaner than this 94 850 because there are no visible deposits in the cam cover when I remove the oil cap and also, the lower block hole for oil return from oil separator (PCV) was nice and 'clean' when I did the PCV, unlike in my 94 850 where the same hole is nearly totally clogged and there are 'rusty' deposits in the cam cover when I remove the oil cap.

But... there is nothing wrong with the 94 850 Turbo, and it's freaking fast.... If only I could minimize the rattles some more (done the tail gate already, will work on dash next).

Funny. You know as well as I do that there are lots of moving parts in our engine that are steel, cams, bearings, crank shaft etc. But I have to agree, the fact that the engine is aluminum probaly minimize shavings.

Its an aluminum engine. ;)

I stopped using a magnetic drain plug because it wasn't catching much (it did catch some really fine particles), but it also harder to torque tight, which i thought was the same spec as factory, which lead to oil leaks at the plug, it also had the top edge of the bolt rounded made it a bit harder to remove. Lastly, it just wasn't worth it. I spent a another $4 to get a another OEM one (because I lost the old one), which was now black colored and made of solid steel (its heavier and more durable than the original one). No more oil leaks and torquing issues.
