Qbm Cam Adjuster

Recommended Posts

I have the t-belt off my 94 right now, will replace leaky water-pump.

So I'm thinking, this is a perfect opportunity to try cam adjustment using the QBM tool. I know QBM is hard to get to right now, but there may be a VS member from CT who is willing to loan-out his.

Is it worth it considering I'm in there (TB) already?

Thanks

If i remember correctly there will be losses and gains through out the powerband. I didn't buy one because I didn't want to lose in the low end and gain in the high end and vice versa. Its gonna be hard if not impossible to make solid gains through the powerband without losses.

Don't buy it. it can mess a lot of things inthe car. It is impossible to get free 50hp by just adjusting the timing.

Not really. It's just a tool to help you adjust cam timing, which will move around your powerband, not necessarily make more overall horsepower. Whether or not that's worth $60 is up to you.

Ive had it for some time now, I think its a great tool to learn firsthand what a huge difference just a few mm of adjustment of the cams can make. I must have changed the timing 10 times, but in the end Ive decided to stick with a timing setting of 0,0. With my setup, it was always too much of a trade off, +3,+3 would make the car absolutely incredible off the line, but once I hit the top of the powerband, the car felt like it hit a wall. -3,-3 made it pull massively hard up top, but made it awful for stop and go city driving due to no low end power. If you are going to adjust the timing, id make sure you have access to the tool because a small adjustment can go a long way and you will most likely need to tweak it after the first settings that you mod.

Cam timing is a tried and true absolutely concretely proven way to alter the powerband. I use the word alter because it doesn't necessarily make more peak power, but it can certainly change the characteristics of your engine. I have my NA set so that the cams hit hard around 3500 and pull hard to redline sacrificing low end torque because I'd rather have the extra peak power (it definitely makes a big difference, proven .3 in the 1/4 mile simply by changing the timing). Its all about personal preference and its all a matter of tweaking it.

That said, I tune my cams without using the tool. I have one but I feel that you can do just as well or better without it because its not very accurate.... There is too much play in the tool, the bolts don't fit into it that tightly and it has a good 1* at least of play on there.

This is what I want to hear. That cam-timing adjustment do make a difference and more importantly, how effective/accurate the QBM tool is. Well, I have my T-belt back on after replacing the leaky waterpump, and I realize that you need the belt on to make any adjustment. I'll probably try and play with this tweak later after I'm done with other more important, boost related things (like chipped ecu to support 18psi B) ).

Thanks for all the feedback!

His name isn't Andy is it?? If so, I'm friends with him and his younger bro....he lives 5 minutes away from me hah...he has the tool and and we were going to do our cams at the same time when he did his timing belt in a few weeks.

I'm glad someone wrote up on this, because I was pretty concerned about the effects of tweaking the cams would do. Will this work if you have an n/a exhaust cam in there too? Or do you only see benefits with stock turbo cams.
