Last night I watched an hour special about a 5 year old diagnosed with schizophrenia. I knew very little about it. Just that it is not the same thing as multiple personality disorder. I didn't realize how dramatically it can affect a person's mental condition. This girl would beat herself up, her parents up, threaten to kill herself, and had constant hallucinations. She would 'see' numbers or days of the week, which she drew on paper as animal-like beings. They would talk to her, hit people, hide, tell her to harm others; but certain numbers or days could be associated with good behavoir as well.

While on somewhat of a meet-and-great with another girl with a similar disodrer, while maintaining the odd care-free innoncent smile of a 5 year old she says "I hate you" to the girl in the middle of conversation. Following that, she turns to the camera and says "That's ok, because she probably hates me" and continues to talk with her.

At another point, her dad asks her where "400 went", refering to a number she constantly sees which they've come to associate with negative behavoir. She replies "oh, he jumped out the second story window." He asks what happened and she replies "Oh, he just sprained his ankle".

The parents certainly have their hands full and have an admirable amount of patience. They rent two apartments and each parent alternates sleeping in alternating apartments with alternating kids. They have a younger son who they are afraid might be harmed by their daughter so they seperate them at night.

Wow. Have to admire those parents. I feel extremely bad, well I guess that's not the right word, I don't know what I feel, but for parents who have children with special needs, such as down syndrome. I used to work at a summer camp for the mentally handicapped, one of the only ones in Wisconsin, and seeing elderly parents dropping off their 40 year old child in a powered wheel chair who needs 24 hour assistance/care really makes you feel grateful that you can think and walk on your own. My Mom is a social worker so I've been in many situations where I've had to be in the presence/help of a child with special needs, and a lot of people can't do that type of stuff, they get uncomfortable, which is sad. You forget how lucky you are that you have the ability to take care of yourself.

Pulled out on the freeway yesterday morning on the way to work, got passed by a gravel truck that and the door on it was a little open, so of course gravel spraying all over the highway. When I checked it out I have a ton of chips in my windshield now, and at least a few chips on the body of the car. I was driving our new Toyota of course. Grr.

Did you get the plate number of the truck? Aren't they responsible for the damage?

Most have signs on the tailgate stating that you should stay at least 50 ft back and that they are not responsible for damage caused to other cars. Not sure how that applies to cars BEING passed by the truck, though.
