Technically, you would need an approved container (a lot of pumps even have approved container warning labels) but I'd bet there are plenty of mini mart jockies that wouldn't put down their magazine over it. Though, I'm not sure they'd bother if it was 3AM and they've had their daily ration of jerky and ho-hos. Best bet is to go out and try it! Bring a video camera. If you get pulled over just tell the cops that you needed some gas. They'll understand and might even let you use one of their buckets if you need more. He needed a couple odds and ends before putting it back together but could easily be put back together in a weekend.
