Black Betty
I hear you. All new cars make me nervous these days. Not to sound like an old man and say 'they don't make em like they used to', but I think they're all playing w/ things they don't entirely understand in the name of being green. I didn't know the Subarus were using oil, that's too bad. Reminds me of the cars from the late 70s and 80s when they were all starting to get into emissions. Well CAFE standards are pushing fuel efficiency, and some automakers are smarter than others at it. In a passenger car 70%-90% of the power generated goes to aero drag (highway use). So logically auto makers should be focusing on aero #1 but very few are. Mostly because something shaped like an Insight or Prius doesn't sell well. So instead you get an all aluminum F150 that will never touch gravel, or have a full bed.
survolvo
New subs with their low friction oil rings are burning oil like no one's business. My coworker bought a 2013 impreza last year and it was burning ~2 qts/1000 miles They eventually re-ringed the motor and gave it back to him. We just bought a 2014 2.5 Forester. I read about this before we bought our Subaru. As I have a 100k warranty, I am not too worried about it. If it does have a problem, it will be well before our warranty runs out. From my readings, it isn't happening to all of them. The ones that are it seems that it's pretty apparent in the first couple thousand miles or so. There are many that are over 10k miles that are not burning any oil. Needless to say I am going to be vigilant at checking ours and will take it in the first sign of any oil consumption. It seems like it really depends on the dealer you take it to. Some have no problem accepting it and fixing the problem, others want to monitor the oil consumption for 1k miles or so. The dealership we bought it from said they have had a handful of people coming in with the problem and they were quick to fix them.

Burn-E
A-Level actors and Hollywood writers tweeting about it? Sounds like a stunt. Likely a Punk'd or some other reality TV show, documentary, or art installation.
