7 VII 7
I would stay away from the 1.8T audis simply cause i've heard the engine fails a lot due to sludge buildup. Maybe the diesel is better or doesn't have that problem. Just stick to Volvo's or Bimmers lol.yeah my brother said that about the sludge build up... but he also said as long as the oil was changed with quality oil and on time (mileage and time) then it should not be an issue
Livvakt
Ok, here's what I know plagues the 1.8T engineCoil packs = flashing CEL, missing, sputteringMAF = Bad throttle response, CEL, poor fuel econ.O2 Sensors = CEL, too rich or too lean, sluggish, overheatingThrottle body = poor idle, bad response, EPC light, Sludge from a reduced oil capacity to fit longitudinally ECT sensor should be updated to newest "green top" version sensor, will cause poor running, too richThe "suction jet pump" can crack or get clogged. It's under the intake manifold on A4's and is a vacuum hose T of sorts with many check valves inside.the Dump Valve on these cars is famous for failing -- it's a diverter valve, but yes, the Bosch unit is known to suck cock. Upgrade. The SAS valve clogging, letting exhaust pass into SAS pump, giving a CEL of a lean condition. The Water Pump impellers are made out of composite plastic, break and cause the timing belt to jump off.The turbo air intake "snorkel" becomes loose, leaks air or oil onto engine. The Fuel Pressure Regulator is famous for failing, causing lean/rich conditions. The FPR vacuum hose, located at the top front of the intake mani is also known to snap off, or become clogged. The Coil Pack wiring harness also is known to fail, the wire insulators crack, the wires eventually crack and the car will show signs of a failed coilpaclk, but it's really the harness.SEVERAL ground points are not screwed on tight enough. Mostly on top of the cam cover, near the coil packs. The electric coolant circulation pump leaks, seizes, shorts out.If I think of anything else, Ill post it up.Thanks for saving me a good amount of typing, haha
turbomoose
holy crap NathanSRSLYThe V6's are not much better, I think they just are not sludge prone, dont have a "suction jet pump" and a few other things. What they lack in 1.8T issues, they create new issues in other parts, but its basically the same junk. I LOVE Audi's, they're super beautiful, but I'd rather have reliability than sex looks, constant CEL's, an empty pocket, mostly incompetent Audi service depts. and endless frustration and worry about WHAT'S NEXT?! turbomoose
Thanks for saving me a good amount of typing, haha Dump Valve, Diverter Valve, whatever, they're all junk, and do the same things really.I don't know how many we've replaced on my sisters Turbo Beetle. Livvakt
SRSLYThe V6's are not much better, I think they just are not sludge prone, dont have a "suction jet pump" and a few other things. The sludge comes from the turbos and the oil-pans being thinner so they could fit everything. Kinda bullshit, but as long as you're not a retard and keep up on your oil changes you're fine.Dump Valve, Diverter Valve, whatever, they're all junk, and do the same things really.I don't know how many we've replaced on my sisters Turbo Beetle.http://www.forgemotorsport.com
turbomoose
I was told that the sludge comes from a smaller oil capacity in the in line engines for the Passat and A4. The Beetle, Golf, and Jetta's 1.8t are sideways, and have a bigger oilpan, and are not really affected by the sludge issue. But I still use full synth, and VW filters and chage it every 5K. And I must say, the VW we have may be a little needy, but it certainly has a lot of personality, drives really well, can really take on a lot of fairly powerful cars, has a great stereo, has a lot of nice features, and I think it's been overall worth the constant needy-ness. Nothing catastrophic has happened, yet. Just a bunch of things that dont seem to need replacing in the Volvos.Would I take the chance and buy a VW/Audi next? MAYBE. Depends on the deal I got, and the car. I've always wanted a 20AE GTI, or an early A8 affected... or is it Effected?? I don't want to be corrected again <_<
