Flushing Transmission

Recommended Posts

Well I'm going to flush my transmission soon, hopefully this Saturday and I want to do it myself. I don't want a high powered machine to do it and risk f-ing things up. Anyways on to the questions...

What fluid should I use while just flushing it out? Obviously something cheap. Where can I get it?

What's the best ATF to use after all the old fluid has been flushed out? Where can I get it?

That's all, thanks.

Whatever you flush it with is the fluid you should fill with. I usually go 14L of TrickShift SYN. Other swear by Motul or Mobile SYN though

Check your manual for the correct type of fluid. For the 97 850's it is:

ATF Dexron IIE/ III and Mercon

Capacity: 8 US qts. (7.6 liters)

I think that maybe they switched to something else later, so you should check.

I recommend getting the change kit from ipd:

http://www.ipdusa.com/Volvo-850/Transmissi.../p-72-152-1050/

This makes it pretty easy, you can do it all without crawling around underneath the car. In case you don't know, the transmission is not like the engine oil pan, you can't just open up a hole and drain out all the transmission fluid. Using the ipd kit, what you end up doing is draining some of the fluid, then putting in new fluid, then draining out more, etc. until it looks clean. So you need about 12 quarts of fluid to get it done even though the transmission only holds 8 quarts.

There are other ways of flushing/changing the fluid but this one is the easiest in my opinion.

A bit of a warning. You should obtain a spare transmission connector clip for the hook up to the radiatior, because if you break the original clip, you cannot secure the hose to the radiator and cannot use the car.

The FCP Groton clip has snapped on me twice, so make sure you have spares. Snap-ring pliers work well to remove this clip securing the connector.

As for fluid, I would recommend that your first flush be with just basic Dex III, just generic stuff. In theory, the manual flush method doesn't actually flush all the old fluid out. You are actually mixing the old and new ATF, when you pump two quarts out and pour two back into the dipstick hole. Then I would run a Auto-RX treatment (www.auto-rx.net), and then flush again to whatever fluid suits you. At this second flush you should have nearly all fresh fluid and no more dirty fluid...

all the ipd kit is a 3 foot hose... just go to homedepot and get it for 2 bucks. you 'll also need a hose to connect a funnel to your dipstick tube to fill it faster and easier.

Yes, I forgot about the funnel. You need a skinny one that goes in the tube (the same tube that has the dipstick for the tranny). You can get those at any autozone or whatever. And you can use a zip-tie to secure the clip on the hose. And yes you could get the hose at home depot. But you have to know what size to get (which I don't know) or else you will end up pumping ATF all over the freakin place.

I just use an old piece of garden hose and a worm drive clamp.
