Hd 1080p Prospects

long story short - i went looking for a plasma but due to product cancellations i only have DLP's too look at without doubling my price. so a samsung 61 dlp 1080p. the picture is very nice the samsung sd with upconvertor tp 1080p works very well. but i'll always impatient; i would prefer to get into blu-ray ASAP, proble so far has been lack of available titles with most due the end of this year.

looking for feed back from people that have similar setups - but mostly the full 1080p setup (excluding sound that's a different story). is it worth splurging on the DVD player before the price comes down, or should i wait. i saw chicken little in HD at the store and it was stupendous.

as an aside how's the HD programming on cable is noticeably good?

btw2: i'm still happy with a plasma 42inch 480P which is equal to the DVD programming i play on it.(except fpr the slight color banding)

inputs very welcome! and some spelling fixed

all cable is going to be in the 1080i range, really only 1080p stuff is blue ray and PS3.

That said, blueray is amazing.

I also have dish network and they have a pretty large selection of HD and the quality is definately noticable with HD

I have had a Mitsubishi 1080p 57" dlp for a year or so.

After doing my research at the time I bought my tv I went with plasma at 1080i. I couldnt justify paying the extra for 1080p when I had no plans on getting hd dvd or blue ray player. Buying or renting the limited selections of dvds.

I normally just watch tv in hd and thats in 1080i which is alot better than the sd channels.

I bought the upconverting dvd player which is abit better than viewing normal dvds.

I just watch the ppv hd channels when I watch a movie anyways

Between dlp, lcd and plasma. Thats a budget and personal preference. Everyone has their opinion on that.

I personally preferred plasma because i felt the colors are crisper and sharper.

Dlp is bulkier and can have lamp issues. Lcd runs lower power and runs cooler.

And dont make your judgement on purchasing when viewing movies like chicken little. Those animated movies always look the best.

Judge it more on movies or shows that are at shot at night time. The tv has the hardest time producing blacks which can show grain.

Shows like CSI miami are super crisp because they are daytime shots.

I just know I love the picture of mine and when people are over they drop their jaw.

Regardless of your input signal, a 1080P display always has to scale and de-interlace the picture to 1080P resolution. ALWAYS! The quality of the signal you put in is far more important that the resolution. This is why blueray and HDdvd look so close to each other. They are both relatively uncompressed HD signals. I can guarantee nobody on this board can tell the difference between a blue ray 1080p image and an HDdvd 1080i image because both are displayed as progressive images on any modern hd set.. If you can afford a blue ray or HDdvd player now, quit thinking about it and go buy one. You will not regret it. There is no other signal you can put to your display that will even come close.

and that was the issue really. there are not that many titles i can find i would even buy at the moment regardless of the resolution, a few yes, a very few, but not many.

the alternative is cable HD broadcast on comcast, not many shows are interesting but if it is an HD broadcast is it similar to Bluray DVD quality. excuse original post - just not my night.

yeah, we have a few months of free hbo etc on the dish and they all have HD channels, so we just search those and DVR the HD movies we want to see, works out pretty well.

And your right about not really being able to tell the difference between 1080i and 1080p, I would bet very few people can tell the difference. Same with PS3 games, most are in 720p anyways :P . I use mine mostly for blueray.

i know this might be a little bias b/c i have a dlp, but lamp issues? one of the reasons people buy dlp's over plasma and lcd's is that in a few years when the bulb runs out all you have to do it buy another one for a couple hundred bucks and you are in business again as opposed to when a plasma or lcd goes bad. as far as being bulky, yeah they are a little bit deeper, but they are still really light.

as for programming, see if you can't buy PLANET EARTH on dvd. it is amazing in hd.

in conclusion, i think no matter what tv you choose, you will not be disappointed coming from regular programming. go to best buy and look at each one's picture. skin colors can look different on each tv and some are better for watching sports.

good luck

No cable or sat picture will even come close to blueray or HDdvd. Those signals are compressed heavily so that they can offer you hundreds of channels, whereas bluray and HDdvd have a 250gig disc to put about an hour of two of video on - much much different in terms of quality.

You really can't get 1080i sets anymore, most of them were tubes with exeption of a few early plasmas. I can't think of a current lcd or plasma at this point that is an interlaced display.

Nice pics of the projector, that looks pretty good. If you really want a pimp setup, do what the owner of the shop I work for does. He's got a 63" Fujitsu plasma in his living room for daytime TV watching and at night he has a 120" dalite screen which motorizes down out of the ceiling and covers up the plasma. His projector is the JVC DLA-HD10K - freakin sick!
