When you get to the point of doing performance upgrades for increasing HP/TQ, you need to consider your final goals for these. In other words, how fast do you want to go? Once you figure that out, we can guide you from there.

Can't we just tell a few people to save from the beginning because more then likely...they'll would prefer a build in the end.

I think its a safer question to ask how much money he wants to spend. I'm sure he'd like 800 million hp in his car if he could afford to do it.

So how much money are you willing to spend? Zulu is referencing his ability to do 300whp for $3000 if I remember right.

I could've done it for less had I known, either way, I'm not the only one doing it. But for 3K you could build the engine, have it tuned with turbo for 5K...

You don't think you could build it for less than $3k? Or is that including port work and such?

I'm talking with a proper head. Another grand for manifolds, another for tuning and whatever cost you have for your turbo.

Wasn't there a TBricks article on this? Shouldn't we have a HUGE sticky area for noobs? I see a lot of these questions asked with the same replies over and over again. Don't get me wrong I have seen articles on this subject but they get lost in the wash and would take even the seasoned VSer many a minute to find them.

And yes he should search but that gets him the same responses we have in this thread.

Granted people have varying views on this particular subject but they seem to all hit three major things...

Downpipe/exhaust upgrade

ECU

Suspension

with a whole lot of stage 0 thrown around.

I recommend doing the suspension first because Volvos have more body roll than Rush Limbaugh.

I've recently completed Stage 0, motor and suspension repairs, 2.5" catback, then wheel package, basic brake service, then suspension upgrades. Most enjoyable and obvious driving change came from suspension upgrades and new wheel package. I own a wagon , so it needs way more help than your car. These cars already have decent HP out of the box, make it handle and it will be safer to drive also. I am now in pursuit of brake upgrade, and have a 16T angled flange and DP going together as we speak. Maybe a mild tune, then I will do exterior followed by interior. All depends on condition of car, and what you can stand to look at/listen to (lots of squeaks and rattles).Sorry to ramble, but sway bars, end links, dampers and springs changed my rollover machine into a car that sticks.
