Guest Guest_Jonathan_*
Hi,recently purchased an 04 s40 t5 with 55k miles on it, yesterday the check engine light came on and then i noticed a howl type engine noise that winds down with the turbo after the ignition is off, when the car is under power (accelerating) the noise is gone. noise is apparent in all other circumstances, also the sound goes away when the dip stick is out. Is this a PCV problem?? Any ideas, ive posted here with no answers, http://www.volvo-forums.com/t17096-04-s40-t5-engine-howl.htm I have it booked in with the dealer but would rather have something to tell them seeing that im hearing alot of people have problems with volvo mechanics.ThanksJono

T5gruppy
I know there are some sucky techs out there, but to generalize all volvo techs like that is not cool. Im a volvo tech at almartin volvo and take offense to what you said. I know im not the greatest tech alive, but im continually learning everyday and trying to better my skills and support others on this site, not put them down. rschleicher
yeah you need to replace the oil seperator/oil filter housing. pretty commonThis is not a plug for IPD, but their paper catalog has a bit of discussion on somewhat unusual "flame trap" system that is used for PCV on Volvo turbos. Here is a link to a representative picture (from an 850 turbo, but I think it is pretty similar for any 5-cyl Volvo turbo):http://www.ipdusa.com/product.asp?strParen...chStartRecord=1If the link doesn't work, just go to their web site and search for "PCV".You might want to first make sure that the hose clamps going in/out of the oil separator box are all tight. I get a little touchy with statements like that cause there are a lot of people who think our main goal in life is to screw them over...thats the service writer job haha. No harm no foul.
