99 V70awd Wagon

A friend asked me to look at a 99 V70 AWD with about 120k on it.

Q's:

ETM extended warranty is 10-yr/200k (and NOT 100k - want to clarify this) whichever comes first?

T-belt is every 90k for 99?

What would indicate a bad bevel gear?

What would indicate a bad viscous coupling?

Front is sort of 'binding' when turning, is this bevel gear/viscous coupling issue?

Dip-stick is smoking already, seems to have no leaks yet. Is PCV service for ETM car similar to conventional TB-equipped cars (98 & below)?

Is it true AWD fuel pump is NOT DIY 'friendly' and would cost close to $1,000 to replace? (he's not that handy and NO, I'm not doing it for him :) ).

Seller wants 4k for it, interior is very good, A/C, heater, all power options work, no sunroof, exterior has a couple of dings.

Tires are good, all the same kind, V-rated Mitch and all looks evenly worn, so it would seems it's being rotated regularly.

ABS is lit, coolant level indicator is also lit but actual coolant level is good (sensor?)

Also, not registered, so didn't get a chance to drive it at cruising speed. Didn't get a chance to jack up the car to confirm no leaks, or check front suspension (bj, tie-rods). No CV boot is torn.

For the record, I'm discouraging him to buy it, and advised him to look for a good 98 FWD if he wants a Volvo wagon, but he seems bent on getting this car.

I hope somebody could find the time to answer each and every question above.

Thanks,

OrleeC

Sounds like there is a lot wrong with it and if he is set on getting it the price should reflect the amount of money still needed to go into it.

ETM is warrantied to 200K (10 years I did not know about :( )

T-belt I believe is 90k-100k, i did mine at 105k

Bad bevel gear would be one that makes a lot of noise and causes the car to basically drive like crap - you'd know if you heard it

VC i have no idea about - i believe a bad VC will cause the rear end to feel like it is dragging

Front binding noise - you'll have to explain further on this...

Smoking dip stick doesn't sound good but I couldn't tell you what was causing it

AWD fuel pumps (there are 2) does require the entire rear end of the car and fuel tank to be dropped - can cost well over $1500 with parts and labour.

4k sounds good but for a car in that condition he could get an R AWD with similar problems - bevel gears and VC are not cheap these days

Suspension is probably fine but engine mounts should be inspected along with the control arm bushings. If the suspension makes no noise it is probably ok - will likely need strut mounts soon enough unless they are fairly new. ABS unit brand new is around $400 plus install. You can get rebuilt ones for under $200.

Sounds expensive to me and sounds like it has never been cared for.

Good luck!

By binding, the sensation is comparable to 'traditional' 4x4 systems (mechanical like my 99 Expedition) being engaged on dry road and steering. Since the 'outer' tires travels a little further than the 'inner' tires in front, the xp would 'bind' (My xp got LSD at the rears, so it compensates for the difference in distance traveled). So, the V70 AWD feels like that when turning, and I can only describe the sensation & noise as binding (like something is going to brake in the front of the car lol) and I'm 100% certain it's the front end.

I know a clogged PCV causes smoking dip-stick (the mileage @120k is relatively low for it to have worn valves/rings, but I guess it's also possible, but then again, no blue smoke). My question was, ETM cars the same hassle/difficulty level compare to TB cars?

Thanks,

OrleeC

I can attest to that, just spent $1,619.00 on that lil mishap :( ! I could have bought another Daily D for that much, lol...
