Navigation Retrofit

Does Volvo offer a retrofit kit for a navigation system for a '99 S70? I went to the dealer and they said no, but they also said Volvo doesn't offer a fog light kit either. After finding a factory fog light kit on myswedishparts.com, I don't necessarily believe the dealer about the nav system. Is there anything available? Factory only, please. No aftermarket systems.

I work at a dealership and would have told you that we do have a fog light kit but that there is no nav retrofit available for your car. Your best bet is to get an aftermarket garmin or something.

I've never seen a stateside S70 with factory nav. You might be able to get the parts required out of Europe if you really have your heart set on it. It's going to be fairly expensive as it's a factory part, plus you'd be dealing with poor exchange rates, plus the install would likely be an involved PITA. Seems completely possible, though.

If you decide you want to go aftermarket, let me know. I give VS member discounts on a couple systems.

Even if you were to get a European factory nav sent here, North American maps would probably be unavailable. System is probably pretty outdated, especially compared to what 0wned could get a hold of for you. A double-DIN headunit like one of the Pioneer Avics would look pretty clean, almost stock looking.

That's true, I never thought about the lack of US maps.

Personally, I like my HK GPS more than the Avics. They have somewhat similar features but the HK is faster to reroute after a bad turn and is a bit easier to use. Plus it has fat finger protection.

What systems do you offer discounts for? Are they just NAV units (ie Garmin, tomtom, etc)?

I am looking for a double-din screen for my x70s with mp3 capabilities (sd card, ipod direct connect, etc) and navigation. Have anything along those lines?

I don't have any big discounts on headunits anymore, though I can still get them.

I was talking about a nav unit. I have one that does MP3, high quality video, and nav for $300 shipped. It uses SD cards, also. It can be plugged into the 12v outlet in your car or it has an internal battery that lasts roughly 6 hours. I went on a trip from NH to CT and used about 40% of the battery life each way. You can charge the battery via the car, a wall outlet, or your computer via USB. The USB connection also provides syncronising capability.

Let me know if this seems like something you'd be interested in.

That sounds like it has some potential. Can the unit be integrated into the stock stereo system? (I assume it can, but want to make sure.) I would obviously like to listen to the MP3s over the car speakers--not just the Navi speaker.

Otherwise, is there anyone in the SoCal area that would be interested in building a Carputer or installing an AVIC system for a fair amount of $?

The unit itself has audio out. The stock stereo does not have any sort of audio in, though. With an aftermarket radio it would be just an easy plug in, but since you have a stock HU it's a bit harder. You woud have to cut the ear pieces off of a set of headphones and solder the wires to the (clearly marked) signal leads for the tape player inside the HU. This would give you bascially a pig tail out of the HU with a headphone jack on the end which can then be plugged into just about anything you want, like the GPS or an iPod.

To get this to work, you just insert a blank tape or a cassette with the tape removed from it into the tape deck on the HU. The stereo will think it's playing the tape when it's actually the signal from the pigtail you've created. It's relatively simple to do, even if you're not some kind of electrical engineer.

Now here is a question: What can be done with the flip up screen that is in the topmiddle of the dash? Has anyone any ideas on how to convert it into sumthing more useful? Maybe some kind of HUD or maybe even a veiw screen for a reverse camera? I have a wagon,so the later might be kind of cool.

I'm not the kind t want to have all kinds of TVs in my car like I see some many people with here on the West Coast. The funniest instance was a guy with a clean Benz coupe with TVs in the headrests of the seats... seems kinda pointless to me. Shouldve put the money into some performance. I passed him up on the freeway on ramp in my 95 Turbo WAGON. He tried to catch up.... but couldn't. :P
